Since cruises were cancelled in March of 2020 due to the pandemic, Disney cruises have continued to get pushed back.

As the Disney Cruise offers “Staycations” to UK residents aboard its ships, departures within the U.S. have continued to receive extended cancelations. Yet, many cruise industry officials are looking for ways that they can resume sailings again sometime soon.
ABC News has reported that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has threatened to sue the federal government if the cruise industry isn’t allowed to resume operations in the state soon. The governor stood beside Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody to say that they are “exploring the the state’s legal options” if the CDC doesn’t open up cruise travel in the U.S. by summer.

Appearing at Port Canaveral with leaders from Carnival, Norwegian, Disney and Royal Caribbean cruise lines, they discussed the fact that Florida has some of the world’s busiest cruise ports. Miami, Port Canaveral near Kennedy Space Center, and Port Everglades near Fort Lauderdale bring millions of visitors to Florida every year, generating billions of dollars in revenue for the economy.

DeSantis argued that the ban is hurting Florida now that cruises have resumed in the Caribbean, Europe, the Mediterranean, Australia, and Asia. He stated that the situation should be left up to passengers for what they’re willing to risk now that testing and vaccines are more widely available. The governor stated that the danger is “no worse than air and train travel” with the restrictions in place.

Industry leaders have chimed in saying that there are no new outbreaks tied to their ships. Cindy Prins, a University of Florida epidemiologist, defended the ban by saying “it is still too early for cruise ships to operate” in the U.S. again. She continued by explaining that families and groups of people can mingle together for prolonged periods of time on a cruise ship, and there is a higher likelihood that the virus could spread.

DeSantis expressed his disapproval of requiring vaccination to participate in the economy. Thomas Mazloum, president of Disney Cruise Line, went on to say “Let’s get people back to the work. The health situation has changed. Cruise lines are cruising very successfully outside the United States, proving that with the right protocols cruising is a very safe and beautiful experience.”

We’ll be on the lookout for any updates regarding the situation.
