Listen. We love Mickey waffles. It’s a waffle…shaped like Mickey Mouse. What more can a person want?! They are iconic for a reason. But, there is one time — ONE TIME — when we say “PASS” to the Mickey waffles. And that is when we are dining at Sleepy Hollow Refreshments in Magic Kingdom. Let us explain.
If you’re new around here, welcome. We are freaks about Disney food. We love it. We write about it. We dream about it. And, yes, when things change, we complain about (or celebrate) it. Here’s a perfect example.
About a year ago, Sleepy Hollow Refreshments changed its iconic waffle sandwiches, switching from big, round waffles to a smaller Mickey waffle. For reference, here’s the BEFORE…
…and here’s the AFTER. Not the same. It’s not even a sandwich at this point — it’s just a waffle with stuff all over it!
So, yes, the Disney food fans were devastated. The texture was off, the experience was all wrong, and the snack just didn’t hit like it used to. We’ve been begging Disney to change the waffles back to their original form for MONTHS.
Now, we’ll leave you with one last look at the Mickey waffle. Get a good, long look at it. Why? Because Disney LISTENED to our pleas. The BIG WAFFLES ARE BACK, PEOPLE. Code RED! We headed straight to Magic Kingdom to see the change for ourselves.
Behold! The round waffles are BACK!
You can get them a few different ways:
- Waffle Served with Powdered Sugar — $6.49
- Waffle with Berries, Powdered Sugar, and Whipped Cream, Served with Powdered Sugar, Strawberries, Blueberries, and Whipped Cream — $8.49
- Waffle with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread, Bananas, Berries, and Whipped Cream, Served with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread, Bananas, Berries, and Whipped Cream — $9.49
- Waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken, Served with Maple-Sriracha Glaze and Parsley Flakes — $12.29
Where to start?! If you’re wondering, “What’s the big deal?“, we’ll do our best to explain. Mickey waffles, while great, just don’t have the structural integrity of the round waffles we know and love. Mickey waffles also have a somewhat spongy consistency that tends to get VERY soft, especially with loads of various toppings weighing it down.
Now that the old-style waffles are back, we can get a good, big bite of all those toppings with a warm, perfectly soft-yet-crunchy waffle. It’s perfection — and you don’t mess with perfection! Luckily, a Cast Member told us the change is here to stay. Thank GOODNESS.
To say we are thrilled would be an understatement. We’re buzzing. We can’t stop talking about waffles, people. We have been waiting for this day for A WHOLE YEAR. Thank you for listening, Disney! WE DID IT!
The waffles taste just as great as we remembered — nice and crispy, while still fluffy on the inside. The chicken on the Waffle with Sweet-and-Spicy Maple Chicken was coated in a sweet, slightly spicy sauce, and the chicken tenders were nice and juicy.
The Waffle with Chocolate-Hazelnut Spread, Bananas, Berries, and Whipped Cream is another WINNER in our book. The fruit is sweet, cool, and fresh, while the whipped cream adds a light vanilla flavor to the snack. Pair all that with that hazelnut spread and you’ve got waffle HEAVEN. Just be warned — the whipped cream will melt!
