CDC Warns of “Ongoing Risk” for Travelers in New Advisory

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a warning for those traveling via mass transit.

While often overlooked, there’s an inherent health risk associated with travel. As a recent outbreak of measles continues to be problematic, the CDC is warning that travelers are especially vulnerable.

The latest surge of measles cases has been cause for concern as the CDC recently updated its advisory to recommend measles vaccination before traveling internationally. As of this writing, at least 1,168 cases in the United States have been confirmed by the CDC.

The advisory warns of susceptibility to measles if traveling internationally. It also warns that travel hubs — such as airports and train stations, as well as tourist hotspots and large, crowded events — make catching measles easier.

The CDC recommends that unvaccinated travelers consider postponing their trips until the measles risk is further assessed and the advisory is lifted.

Measles is spread through coughing and sneezing, and can remain in the air for up to two hours.

  • Under 5 years old: 339 (29%)
  • 5-19 years old: 439 (38%)
