The Risky $22 Purchase Disney Adults Keep Making at Disney World Hotels

Staying at a Disney World hotel can be worth it for many reasons.

All Star Movies

You’ve got complimentary transportation to the Disney World parks, water parks, as well as Disney Springs, incredible Disney theming all around you (depending on where you stay), Extended Evening Hours if you’re staying at a Deluxe Resort and Early Entry no matter where you stay, and you’ll be fully immersed in the Disney bubble the whole time. However, there’s one perk that is either entirely worth the additional fee, or not at all, and there really isn’t an in between.

At all Disney World hotels, you can choose to purchase a Resort Refillable Mug for $22 if you’re staying there. Now, if you’ve purchased the Disney Dining Plan (either one), you’ll get a Resort Refillable Mug for every person in your group included in the price of the plan.

This mug can be used at all drink fountain locations around the hotel…but NOT in the parks. Yep, that’s right, you’ll need to fill up your refillable mug with whatever drink you’d like before you head out to the parks for the day, and if you want a refill, you won’t be able to get it in the parks (unless you’re asking for a free cup of ice water to refill it with).

If you know you’ll be spending a good amount of time at your hotel/dining at your hotel, or know that you’ll remember to fill it up every day before you head into the parks, AND you/your family drink a lot of soda normally, then this could be a great deal for you. Otherwise though, since you won’t be able to refill it in the parks, many have found that purchasing a Resort Refillable Mug just isn’t worth it.

We had a member of our team buy it on their last trip and honestly they only used it once, because they didn’t plan to refill it every morning and evening, and didn’t eat at the hotel very often. Now, it is still a souvenir in a way, but they don’t use it at all — it just sits on a shelf, so they don’t feel it was really worth it.

Refillable Mugs

Buying one may not seem like a huge deal (although we don’t recommend spending $22 on something you won’t use or enjoy as a souvenir), but if your whole family is getting one, that can get expensive quickly, and when you’re already spending so much on vacation, you’ll want to make sure it’s something you’ll really get good use of.

  1. Universals system of refillable mugs is way better since you can use them in the parks. So nice to be able to walk to the coke freestyle machine and get lots of ice and a drink or water in that huge mug. We go in the summer so it’s way easier to stay hydrated. Disney gives you those tiny baby cups of free water and I was constantly trying to get to a quick service for water. The fill your own bottle stations the water was always warm.

  2. We had resort cups and used them every morning and most evenings, perfect for my husband’s coffee – saves buying until later in the day but also for my cup of tea, I bring my own teabags (Yorkshire decaf tea) and ask for no fat milk at one of the food counters, then I add hot water. At home the cups make for excellent garden cups as they keep drinks warm and the lids keep the nasty critters out. We also take them to beach as again the lids keep drink in and nasty stuff out.
