3 Airlines Cut Flights at Popular Florida Airport This Year

As anyone whose flown in 2025 can attest, the year has been a somewhat stressful one for travel. From discontinued routes to rules changes, and even a government shutdown, flying was… complicated at times, with ramifications. that will last through 2026 and beyond.

Travel to Walt Disney World and the overall Central Florida tourism corridor has specifically been impacted, as several airlines changed their routes into both Orlando International Airport (MCO)  and Tampa International Airport (TPA), altering how and when many visitors travel to the area.

Let’s begin with JetBlue, which announced in August that they would be suspending their direct route between Newark Liberty International Airport and Tampa as of December 1st. This is a major blow to travelers coming from the New York metropolitan area, as Newark is one of the three major airports that serve the immediate New York City area. As of now, JetBlue’s website shows flights resuming in April 2026. However, that is subject to change. In the meantime, there are flights with stopovers available from JetBlue, while other airlines lie United, are still offering direct flights.

Tampa wasn’t only besieged by one cut, however. According to WTSP10, during the summer, JetBlue reduced its schedule from TPA by “44 flights, slashing service to Boston, Rhode Island, and both LaGuardia and JFK airports in New York.”

They additionally reported that, Spirit Airlines cut 84 planned flights out of Tampa in July, including flight to Las Vegas, New Orleans, Atlanta, and several others major cities.

On top of all that, Florida-based carrier Silver Airways ended operations entirely. The small airline had offered direct flights to locations including Fort Lauderdale, Key West, Pensacola, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean. Given continued inflation and issues with the greater tourism industry due to cost-of-living and political issues, it seems a certainty that there will be more upheaval in 2026.

Things only became more hectic during the government shutdown, which lasted from October 1st through November 12th. At one point, 40 major U.S. airports — including MCO and TPA — had to cut flights in response to staffing shortages, and the massive onset of the record-setting Thanksgiving travel season was only averted by a last-minute deal.

Passengers whose flights weren’t canceled found a litany of rule changes when they arrived at airports. These included several from the TSA, including:

  • Enforcement of Real ID standards.
  • Being allowed to keep their shoes ON while going through security.
  • New rules requiring that lithium-ion battery devices like portable chargers be stored only in carry-on baggage.

Meanwhile, 2026 is scheduled to see some major rule changes from Southwest Airlines. After ending their “Bags Fly Free” policy in 2025, the airline is introducing assigned seating for the first time in its history in January 2026, and also altering their “Customers of Size” policy the same month. According to the airline, from then on, customers who “encroach upon the neighboring seat(s) should proactively purchase the needed number of seats prior to travel to ensure the additional seat is available.”
