Why We’re Worried About the Future of Magic Kingdom

We’re starting to get a bit worried about the future of Magic Kingdom

Frontierland is going to change

The new Cars Land and Villains Land expansions will no doubt usher in a whole different era at this park, and while we’re thrilled that more rides, restaurants, and entertainment will be on the way, we can’t help but feel like everything in Frontierland is about to change. Here’s what we mean.

At D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event, we got the news that Magic Kingdom would welcome a new Villains-themed land and a new Cars area entirely different from the one at Disney California AdventureThe villain area will be “beyond Big Thunder Mountain” while the Cars area will replace what is currently the Rivers of America and Tom Sawyer Island.

When announcing Villains Land, Disney shared that “The evil ambition of all these Villains means that the possibilities are endless for the stories that can be told — and visitors to the dark and thorny land should be prepared for whatever chaos might come their way.”

The space will be home to two major attractions, dining options, and shopping offerings on an “incredibly twisted grand scale.” We’ve already seen permits filed for this new land at Magic Kingdom.

Cars Land will feature two new attractions. One will be a “thrilling rally race through the mountains. Take on wild terrain as you race across the landscape climbing mountain trails, dodging geysers and — Mater’s favorite — splashing through mudholes.”

“The American West has always been about keeping your eyes on the horizon … believing in yourself, carving your own path, and striving toward success. That goes for miners in the mountains, bears from the country, a princess from the bayou … or a racecar from the big city,” Disney Parks and Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro said.

It all sounds so exciting and we’re looking forward to seeing the transformation come to life — but that doesn’t mean we don’t still have our reservations! The new Cars Land will mean we have to say goodbye to Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America, and Villains Land will change the landscape “beyond Big Thunder.”

These upcoming changes mean that Frontierland is going to look completely different than it does as we know it today. No matter how you feel about the changes, they’ll definitely take some getting used to.

On one hand, fans (including us!) have been begging for a Villains Land at Disney World — and Magic Kingdom more specifically — for a long while now, and we’re thrilled it’s finally happening. We hope Disney puts the same immersion into this land as they did with Pandora at Animal Kingdom or Galaxy’s Edge at Hollywood Studios.

Coming Coming to Frontierland at Magic Kingdom, a new area themed to Pixar Animation Studios’ “Cars” will leave Radiator Springs and head to the wilderness with two new attractions including an off-road race.

We’ll be interested to see how the sightlines behind Big Thunder Mountain change or if Disney works its magic and does something to keep things as they are, though.

As for the Cars area, losing Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America is disappointing, but the prospect of new rides and more is pretty promising.

Ultimately, the only constant around Disney World is change (and price increases) but no matter how you feel about the massive Magic Kingdom expansion — you can be sure we’ll be keeping you updated on all the new details!

  1. These are extremely stupid ideas. What’s gotten into the Disney management is unclear, but what is clear is that we need to get Disney management out! They need to be OUT!!!

Villain’s land is completely outside of the character of anything that Walt Disney ever did. The villains were only made for there to be a conflict in the story to contrasty beautiful qualities of the good characters, not to be the subjects of an entire story or land. This idea is just so stupid and repulsive that it makes it clear that the current Disney management has no judgment.

As for replacing frontierland with cars Land, that’s equally repulsive and idiotic. Without frontierland it is not the magic kingdom. Moreover, cars land belongs in Disney’s Hollywood studios as part of Toy Story land, NOT in the magic kingdom! Cars Land will make the magic Kingdom seem like nothing more than a piecemealed flea market of rides. I’ll certainly never go again and if they continue with the stupid idea, many will despise the Disney management for the rest of their lives and beyond. Honestly, we already do, but this will just make it even worse.

And let’s not forget the fact that iger wants to take Walt’s name out of Walt Disney World and just make it Disney world. I can’t think of anything that they can do that would be closer to sacrilege than that. It was Roy Disney who insisted on including Walt’s name with Disney World to make it Walt Disney World and he did that because of his great love for his little brother, without him there would be no Disney World or Disney company, or I agree with a fat seven or eight figure job. And with what they’re showing us now, most of these people at the Disney company would be working at a job where their main line is “would you like fries with that?”

    1. I was going to reply in the same vein but you beat me to it and said it better. These rides belong in other parks. HS and AK only have 9 to 10 rides and desperately need more capacity to spread the crowds.
