What Is the “Screamer of the Day” at Disneyland, and Why Is It Kept a Secret?

If you’re a big fan of Monsters, Inc., you might have wanted to pursue your own college degree in scaring. Unfortunately, Monsters University has not opened its doors to humans yet, but there is a special experience in Disneyland that allows you to live your Monsters, Inc. dream.

Over at Disneyland, we love the Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue attraction in Disney California Adventure. This unique attraction is only located in California and is a dark ride taking you through the story of Monsters, Inc.

Screamer of the Day is an honorary title that Cast Members give to the first riders of the day for Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sully to the Rescue. Cast Members will choose a guest or family to receive this, and they’ll be the first ones to ride the attraction and receive a Lightning Lane to ride it again later.

You’ll also get to sign your name in this book filled with other Screamers of the Day. In addition, you’ll receive a timecard that says Screamer of the Day with the date on it.

Now, before we get too into this, you should know that you can’t guarantee Screamer of the Day. It’s up to the discretion of the Cast Members who they pick for this experience.

For your best bet on becoming Screamer of the Day, you’ll want to head to Hollywood Backlot as soon as possible. As soon as you scan into the park, head straight there and hang around the attraction before it even opens.

When we tried it, it actually took us two times to get picked! The first time a family with young kids was picked, which was pretty adorable to watch. The second time, we came decked out in our Monstrs, Inc. gear, and that was the magic that worked for us! The Cast Members saw our dedication and invited us to this experience.

There are quite a few Disneyland attractions that have special signing books for the first guests of the day, so if you frequent Disneyland often, you should try to head to an attraction straight away to see if they offer it. They even have the first Pickle of the Day, where you get a special celebration button if you are the first one to buy a pickle in a pouch on that day. As the first Disney Park, Disneyland really likes to celebrate firsts!

Unfortunately, this attraction will be closing in 2026 to make room for the new Avatar expansion coming to Disney California Adventure. We’ll be sad to lose this fun ride, along with this cool perk.
