After 20 Years, This Beloved Disney Ride Will Permanently CLOSE Next Year

The Disney Parks are always changing, which means saying goodbye to classic attractions is not uncommon.

Disney California Adventure

Expansion is officially underway at the Disneyland Resort. Part of the expansion plans includes some pretty big changes at Disney California Adventureincluding a brand-new Avatar Land in the park. The new land will take up part of the Hollywood Backlot, meaning we’ll be saying goodbye to a popular attraction pretty soon.

In order to make room for the new project, Disney will ultimately need to permanently close Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! before construction commences.

Monsters, Inc. Ride

The Monsters, Inc. ride was initially Superstar Limo in 2001 until it quickly closed in 2002 to make way for the new Monsters, Inc. theming.

Superstar Limo

Superstar Limo was a dark ride that transported guests through a cartoony version of Hollywood in a “stretch limo” as they’d be introduced to several animated celebrities such as Drew Carey, Cher, Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Allen, Regis Philbin, Antonio Banderas, Cindy Crawford, and more.

The ride was poorly received and quickly rethemed.

Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! opened in 2006 and has been a staple of Disney California Adventure ever since.

This dark ride takes passengers in little taxicabs throughout Monstropolis as they closely follow the events of the film. Featuring bits from famous scenes from the movie, an interactive Roz audio-animatronic that can tailor her dialogue based on the passengers in the cars, fun ginger smells in Harryhausen’s, and lots of laughs and nostalgia.

After a 20-year run, Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! is closing for good sometime in 2026.

Guests looking to experience this attraction one last time will — at the very least — have the opportunity to do so all throughout the rest of 2025.

The new Avatar Land will be unlike the one at Disney’s Animal Kingdom, taking more inspiration from Avatar: The Way of Water and the following sequels.

The land will be home to a boat ride that will be, according to Disney, “An excursion in search of majestic natural wonders that can only be found on Pandora.”

Guests can expect a sense of adventure and wonder on this new attraction, as well as some possible thrills. With that said, we still don’t know the specifics of what the ride will be like, other than the fact that it will be a high-capacity boat excursion.

We’ll be sure to bring you all the latest developments and updates surrounding this new land and its offerings as soon as they’re made available!

While we’re really excited about an Avatar Land coming to California Adventure, given the success of the one over at Animal Kingdom, we can’t help but feel a bit sad about losing such a fun attraction.
