Why We’re Excited About a Bunch of Rocks in EPCOT

The massive EPCOT transformation is still underway, and we’ve been following the progress on the upcoming Journey of Water — Inspired by Moana attraction.

Spaceship Earth

The attraction will have guests walking through an area with various water features, full of details inspired by the movie Moana. It will also feature many large rock structures, and we just got a closer look at that rockwork!

Imagineer Zach Riddley shared some photos on Instagram, as well as gave new detail about the rock shapes guests will see in the attraction. He wrote, “The craft of creating rockwork is a blend of art and science, and seeing this carving and sculpting progress live is one of the things I love most about my role as an Imagineer.”

He went on to say, “I joined the project team for a walk of the site alongside Imagineers Scott and Robert, two of our leaders overseeing the project.

“The range of textures are inspired by real-world formations – all the way down to the tiniest details and variation that, when finished, should be impossible to distinguish from the real thing.”

We’ve seen the rocks popping up all over the attraction’s construction site, and like everything else Disney does, these rock formations are meant to look as realistic as possible. We’ll continue to keep an eye on the construction and let you know when we notice more changes.
