Why the New Avatar Movie is a BIGGER Deal Than You Think

Disney has acquired a lot of intellectual properties over the years!

Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

At this point, the company is famous for having so many properties under its belt, and some of them have made their way into the Disney parks. Disney has done a great job of integrating some of their most popular franchises into the parks, like Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge in Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Avengers Campus in Disney California Adventure. There’s another intellectual property that has become a huge part of the Disney parks that could be making waves for the company very soon!

Back in 2017, Pandora: the World of Avatar opened in Disney’s Animal Kingdom in Disney World. The inventive and immersive land was a huge success, and the attractions from that land continue to have some of the highest wait times in Animal Kingdom due to their popularity, but when was the last time you watched the movie it was based on?

Avatar was the biggest movie in the world when it came out, and continues to be the highest grossing movie of all time, but aside from Animal Kingdom, it doesn’t seem to have left any major cultural marks. However, a sequel to James Cameron’s blockbuster is coming out this December, and if you didn’t care before, you should.

Avatar: The Way of Water comes out on December 16th, and the first trailer for the film premiered with Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The trailer was released online shortly after, and the movie is already making waves. In the first 24 hours of the trailer being online, it got 148.6 million views, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That’s more than any recent Star Wars film, including The Rise of Skywalker.

With the trailer’s massive success and the seemingly unbeatable record set by the film’s predecessor, Avatar: The Way of Water is shaping up to be one of the biggest films in the world, which could mean a lot for Disney.

Disney did not own the franchise when the first movie came out, so its success didn’t have any major effects on the company. However, if The Way of Water is as big of a hit as we’re predicting, this could mean a spike in all things Avatar for the Walt Disney Company.

While there are already several more Avatar sequels planned, we could see them come a lot faster than The Way of Water did, which is premiering 13 years after the first film. We could see more Avatar content come to Disney’s other entertainment platforms like Disney+, which is already producing a ton of content for the company’s other franchises like Star Wars and Marvel.

The Way of Water could also bring some changes to the Disney parks! Disney is no stranger to changing attractions to reflect new content. Star Tours, a Star Wars themed simulation ride in Disneyland and Disney’s Hollywood Studios, has been updated to include content from the latest Star Wars movie, The Rise of Skywalker. Flight of Passage, one of the attractions in Pandora, is also a screen-based ride, and could therefore go through an update without any major construction.

Flight of Passage

An update to Flight of Passage, which is already one of Disney World’s longest lines, could make standby wait times rise, and make it much harder to get a Lightning Lane reservation to skip the line. With Flight of Passage wait times still consistently topping 100 minutes 5 years after the land opened, an update could send those times sky high.

Regardless of an update, it’s also very possible that the new Avatar film creates more interest for the land, and Pandora could become even more popular than ever! If you haven’t ridden Flight of Passage or Na’vi River Journey, we suggest getting some rides in before the new movie comes out, because if it’s as promising as it looks, Pandora: The World of Avatar might be even more of a vacation hotspot!
