There are good days to go to Disney World, and there are bad days to go to Disney World. Let us introduce you to one of those days when you really do not want to be in the parks.

There are a lot of openings coming to Disney World this summer, and one day in particular, when a super popular attraction is reopening, we would probably skip unless you want to deal with major crowds.
Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is opening on May 3rd in Magic Kingdom, and we know fans are going to be rushing over there to ride. It’s been closed for over a year, and it was popular before the closures. We can only imagine what it will be like with a new track and scene.

For example, here’s what it looked like on the day before it closed for the refurbishment.

Yeah, that’s pretty busy.

After riding, we bet lots of people are going to spend the day in Magic Kingdom, maybe riding other classics like Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin, which also just reopened from a refurbishment with new targets, blasters, bechiles, and more.

If you’re insisting on riding Big Thunder on the day it opens, we have some tips for working with the crowds. First up, you’ll definitely want to get here early. Now, Frontierland is not a part of Early Entry, which is where hotel guests get 30 minutes of extra park time before the parks open to the public. Just because the land isn’t open doesn’t mean there won’t be lines that start during Early Entry.

We plan to arrive early and wait in line to enter the land. Once you’re in, head straight to Big Thunder (no running, of course).

You can also purchase the Lightning Lane Multi Pass, which includes Big Thunder. It will be a tier one attraction, so you’ll want to select it first.t It will also probably sell out quickly, so go ahead and grab it as soon as you see it. You only get one tier one attraction to start, so you really need to select it first if you plan to ride it.
Even if you have Lightning Lane, the queue will probably still be busy. You’ll still want to be patient and expect to wait a bit in line. Plan on bringing snacks, headphones, and anything else you need to make the queue go more smoothly. Both the Lightning Lane and the standby queues are outdoor, and while there is some cover, it can get very hot. The extended queue is not covered, so make sure you have sunscreen, hats, and other sun protection.

While you might have luck towards the end of the day with shorter waits, we wouldn’t wait till the final minute. On very busy days, Disney is known for closing the lines early, so you can’t sneak in at the last minute. You can keep an eye on the waits by checking the Disney World app.

Make sure you keep following AllEars. We’ll be there on the opening day of the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad and check out the crowds for ourselves.
