We Regret to Inform You About This BIG Magic Kingdom Ride Change

Listen up, Space Rangers, we’ve got an important transmission for you!

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

On April 8th, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin reopened in Magic Kingdom after a lengthy refurbishment. The ride refresh included several new features we were super excited about, like new ride vehicles and removable blasters! But there is one big change that we weren’t quite so over the moon about.

What could possibly be the downside when the ride refurbishment brought so many cool new features to the attraction (seriously, we’ve been asking for removable blasters for YEARS)? Well, we regret to inform you that in the new version of the ride, it’s WAY harder to hit Galactic Hero status.

Buzz Lightyear

For any new Space Ranger recruits, “Galactic Hero” is the highest rank available for your score on the ride. Before the refurbishment, the scores maxed out at 999,999, and hitting that amount made you a Galactic Hero. Now, there is no maximum score, and hitting 1,000,000 or over puts you in Galactic Hero territory. Now, you might be thinking, “Can needing one more point really make it that much harder to achieve??” But the increased difficulty isn’t about the number of points you need — it’s about how you can earn them!

The scoreboard!

Another HUGE change that came with the Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin refurbishment is the switch to interactive targets that change colors when they’re hit. Before the refurbishment, each target was worth a set number of points, so we knew which select few to focus on and make sure we hit to max out our score. But now, the targets are interactive, and their point values change, so you can no longer count on a handful of targets to earn you the coveted Galactic Hero status!

Look at those targets!

Basically, before the change, we had a few ultra-high value targets that we knew we needed to hit each time since the point values were always the same. But now, you’ll need to be MUCH more strategic to rack up your score by looking for targets that are worth more points as they change in real-time.

The well deserved upgrade!

We’ve ridden the new version a few times and picked up some tips to help you on your journey to becoming a Galactic Hero!

  • Targets that are lit up with a white ring are worth double their normal points.
  • Clusters of targets that are flashing in rainbow colors are the rarest and most valuable ones in the game! They also unlock a 10-second bonus mode in which you can rapid-fire at any target for massive points.
  • It’s better to hit lots of targets instead of focusing on one.
  • Farther targets are worth more points.
  • Try to hit as many targets as possible in quick succession, as their values can change.
  • You can hold down the trigger constantly rather than pulling it each time you’d like to fire.
The new blaster!

Seems like a lot to take in? Don’t worry, one of the other changes to the ride is the addition of an opening scene starring Buddy, a brand-new animatronic character who’s there to prepare you for your mission!  You’ll also have the chance to hone your blaster aim in this area before the ride officially begins.

Buddy!

With the recent updates to the ride, it’s definitely going to be a lot harder to earn that coveted Galactic Hero status, but we know you’re up for the challenge! We’ll let you know if we pick up any other tips to help rack up your score as we continue to ride the new version and hone our skills!
