Why Disney Experts Are Suddenly Rope Dropping This Magic Kingdom Ride

After a long-term refurbishment, Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin has reopened at the Magic Kingdom, and guests are flocking to the revamped ride first thing in the morning!

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin

Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin first opened at the Magic Kingdom back in the fall of 1998. The Toy Story-based attraction replaced the Delta Dreamflight (itself the final iteration of the long-running If You Had Wings attraction). Using the same omnimover ride system as its predecessors, Space Ranger Spin allowed riders to “shoot” at intergalactic targets with blasters affixed to the ride vehicles as they traveled through space with Buzz on a mission to defeat Emperor Zurg. In the summer of 2025, the Tomorrowland attraction closed for a long refurbishment that ended on April 8th.

The attraction’s refurbishment brought several new features to Space Ranger Spin, including new ride vehicles…

Said blasters can be aimed at newly refurbished “Z” targets throughout the ride.

And, perhaps the most notable change, a new opening scene featuring the original robot character named Buddy, ensures that “departing Space Rangers are fully prepared for their mission (by) enthusiastically providing encouragement, final system checks on their Star Cruisers, and a chance to hone their blaster aim.”

All of these changes have given Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin way more than a proverbial new coat of paint, as the experience — especially the interactive blaster element — has been drastically improved by this recent refurbishment. The new interactive targets change when you hit them, making successful hits easier to spot. There’s even a new on-ride photo!

All of these additions have made the ride arguably more popular than it’s been in about 25 years, and have crowds flocking to it, INCLUDING early in the morning directly from rope drop. However, Disney hotel guests have a one-up here as Space Ranger Spin IS one of the Magic Kingdom attractions open as part of Early Entry.
