“I Don’t Get It. Nostalgia I Guess.” — Why Fans Refuse to Wait for This Popular Magic Kingdom Ride Anymore

Magic Kingdom is full of some of the most nostalgic, tear-jerking, memory-inducing rides in all of Disney World (…or is that just me?).

Cinderella Castle from Fantasyland

Not only was this the first Disney World park to open, meaning it’s had the most time for people to be able to create memories here, but this park is also home to some of the oldest IP. You’ve got rides, attractions, restaurants, and decor based on some of the most iconic and oldest Disney stories, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Cinderella, and, of course, Peter Pan.

However, not everyone is a fan of some of these nostalgic attractions when they boast 60+ minute waits almost all day long, and there’s nothing that “wows” guests about them. Yes, there’s one ride in particular we’re talking about — we talked with our readers, and it seems like A LOT of Disney World guests don’t get the hype behind Peter Pan’s Flight anymore.

Peter Pan’s Flight is a dark ride located in Fantasyland that often sees 45-60 minute waits on good days, and 80+ minute waits on busy days, or busy times of day. In this ride, which lasts just a few minutes, you fly away over London and see certain iconic parts of the well-known story. It’s pretty dated, if we’re being totally honest, but for Disney fans who grew up on the film, it’s often a large source of nostalgia for them. As it turns out, though, maybe that’s starting to change for many Disney goers.

Peter Pan’s Flight

We asked on our Facebook page what rides our readers thought were the most overrated, and a SHOCKING amount of you said Peter Pan’s Flight. One of the comments that stood out to us the most and seemed to combine many people’s thoughts altogether was reader George Borger, who said,

“I have said this so many times, Peter Pan’s Flight, by far, is THE most overrated and disappointing ride. Everyone talks about the nostalgia for it. That doesn’t make it a good ride. Long lines especially for a short ride.”

Peter Pan’s Flight during After Hours (a 40 minute wait!)

Another reader, Kevin Dunlap, said something similar, but even more concise, writing,

“I don’t get it. Nostalgia I guess. It feels cheap and it’s boring. Not worth the wait.”

Now, cheap is an interesting word used to describe the ride that we don’t often hear, but we see where he’s coming from. Since the ride is so dated and only one scene has been updated in the past few decades, the animatronics feel very out of date, and sometimes borderline freaky with their jerky movements. We also saw lots of readers mention that they won’t wait in the standby line, but they’re not opposed to using Lightning Lane. Hannah Schwab in particular said,

“I get the nostalgia but I’m not waiting that long to ride it. So we will do lightning lane, bypassing the queue…”

Peter Pan’s Flight

The Lightning Lane for Peter Pan’s Flight is often one of the quickest to sell out, or have times pushed way out to the end of the day (that doesn’t mean you can’t keep checking back to see if earlier times will open up earlier, though; we’ve seen it happen many times). Peter Pan’s Flight is fortunately part of Lightning Lane Multi Pass, not Lightning Lane Single Pass, so you won’t need to buy a completely separate Lightning Lane type to experience it on the day of your visit.

Peter Pan’s Flight

If you’re visiting Peter Pan’s Flight over in Disneyland, which is a very, very similar version to this attraction, you’ll often notice it also has some higher wait times, but not nearly what it reaches in Disney World, which makes it even more interesting that it’s only the East Coast version of this ride that sees as long of wait times as it does. However, we do suspect this is due to Disney World being more of an international destination than Disneyland is.

Peter Pan’s Flight in Disneyland

Overall, we totally see both sides — if you don’t have a deep-seated nostalgia for the ride, and it doesn’t really mean much to you, then it’s probably best to skip it, or snag a Lightning Lane if you can. However, if you’re a big fan of the story or it was a part of your childhood (like it was for me!), you likely don’t mind waiting in the slightly longer line, or prioritize riding it at a time of day where the wait time drops. What’s beautiful about Disney World vacations is that every single one is different — what’s best for you and your group may not be best for another, and that’s okay!

  1. The fact that Peter Pan has consistently long waits (due as much to its low ridership/hour as nostalgia) is one reason it won’t update. The other is that if people are paying extra to ride it through Lightning Lanes, then the ride is perceived as valued as is.
