This EPCOT Project Is Officially Back From the Dead

We’ve Been Here Before

We need to rewind this ride vehicle a little. Back in 2019, Disney was in the middle of announcing a HUGE transformation of EPCOT. Some pieces of that plan eventually happened, including Remy’s Ratatouille Adventure, Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind, Journey of Water Inspired by Moana, and World Celebration.

Others joined EPCOT’s increasingly well-populated graveyard of abandoned ideas. Spaceship Earth landed somewhere in between. Disney announced plans for a major refurbishment of the attraction that would shift some of its focus away from inventions and technology and toward storytelling and the universal human experience.

Many existing scenes were expected to remain, but Disney planned to breathe some new life into them while also adding new scenes, story elements, and narration. And this wasn’t some far-off Blue Sky concept. Spaceship Earth was actually scheduled to close on May 26th, 2020.

Then…May 2020 happened. You probably remember how that went.

And Then It Vanished

Disney World closed in March 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic, throwing construction schedules across the resort into complete chaos. When EPCOT reopened in July, Spaceship Earth reopened with it. That was our first big clue that something had changed.

Then the Spaceship Earth refurbishment disappeared from the EPCOT Experience, the now-defunct preview center Disney used to showcase its huge plans for the park’s transformation. Disney subsequently confirmed that development of both the Spaceship Earth project and the planned Mary Poppins attraction in EPCOT’s United Kingdom Pavilion had been postponed.

And that was pretty much that. Spaceship Earth eventually received a much smaller infrastructure-focused refurbishment, but the massive reimagining Disney had announced never materialized.

Years passed. EPCOT’s transformation moved forward. CommuniCore Hall opened. World Celebration arrived. Test Track got another update. GEO-82 opened INSIDE Spaceship Earth. And still, Disney said basically nothing about those old plans for the actual ride.

Eventually, we started treating this refurbishment the same way we treat the Mary Poppins attraction and PLAY! Pavilion. Gone but occasionally brought up at parties.

Surprise! It’s ALIVE

Fast-forward to D23 2026. During the Horizons: A Carousel of Progress presentation, Disney Imagineer Ali Rubinstein joined Neil Patrick Harris and Mark Rober to talk about Spaceship Earth. And then Disney casually dropped a pretty enormous piece of EPCOT news. Spaceship Earth is getting its first major update in nearly 20 years.

Disney says the reimagined attraction will take Spaceship Earth into the internet age and beyond. Currently, the attraction follows the development of human communication from prehistoric times through the modern era. If you’ve ever thanked the Phoenicians without really knowing why, this is the ride responsible.

The updated version will broaden that idea. Instead of focusing specifically on human communication, Disney says the new Spaceship Earth will focus on human connection. That’s a subtle distinction on paper, but it could mean some pretty substantial changes inside the attraction. Disney also indicated that the ride will remain recognizably and, importantly, classically EPCOT.

But Is This the SAME Refurbishment?

Sort of. We wouldn’t call this Disney simply hitting “resume” on the project it paused in 2020. The themes certainly rhyme. The 2019 version would have focused heavily on storytelling and the ways stories connect humanity across generations. Disney talked about a new guide, new narration, and new scenes reflecting the universal human experience.

Now Disney is talking about human connection, the internet age, and continuing the attraction’s journey into the future. That’s close enough that this very much feels like the Spaceship Earth reimagining has returned, but different enough that we wouldn’t expect every piece of that old concept art to suddenly become relevant again.

Six years is an eternity in Imagineering time. Technology changed. EPCOT changed. Disney’s construction priorities REALLY changed.

We Still Have Some BIG Questions

Disney gave us the headline at D23. It did not give us the entire instruction manual. We still don’t know when Spaceship Earth will close, how long the refurbishment will take, or when the updated attraction is expected to debut. We also don’t know exactly which scenes will change. And perhaps most importantly for a certain group of Spaceship Earth loyalists…

WHAT IS HAPPENING TO JUDI DENCH?!

Disney has not announced whether the current narration will survive this refurbishment. That silence will surely result in perfectly calm and rational discussion among EPCOT fans. Disney also hasn’t detailed exactly how the ride will depict the internet age or what “and beyond” actually means.

That could involve updates to the latter portions of the attraction, new scenes throughout the ride, a substantially different descent, or something we haven’t seen yet. For now, Disney is keeping those details tucked safely inside the big geodesic ball.

This One Actually Came Back

Disney has plenty of projects that have disappeared over the decades. Some were officially canceled. Others were quietly shelved until everyone stopped asking questions. For years, the Spaceship Earth refurbishment seemed destined for that second category.

Instead, six years after the project was postponed, Disney has officially announced a major reimagining of the attraction again.

It may not be precisely the same version we were promised in 2019, but the larger idea is alive again. An attraction devoted to humanity’s endless cycle of inventing, changing, scrapping ideas, and inventing again has apparently spent six years doing exactly that behind the scenes. Now we just need to find out what Disney actually built.
