REVIEW: There’s a Reason This Magic Kingdom Restaurant Is One of Our Favorites

You’ve come to the right place if you’ve been trying to figure out where to eat in Disney World on your upcoming vacation!

Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake

Here at AllEars, we know all the ins and outs of Disney restaurants — including where you should definitely eat, and where you should skip. We recently stopped by Liberty Tree Tavern at Magic Kingdom, which is widely known as one of people’s favorite table service spots in the park. Does it live up to the hype? Let’s find out!

Background

Liberty Tree Tavern is a table service, all-you-care-to-enjoy family style meal in Liberty Square, and it’s long been a favorite of Disney guests. It opened up with the park (and resort as a whole) on October 1st, 1971, so talk about history!

Liberty Tree Tavern in Magic Kingdom

As Liberty Square doesn’t have many attractions at this time — only Haunted Mansion and Hall of Presidents now that the Riverboat has closed to make way for Piston Peakmany guests who are newer to the park walk right by this spot and don’t give it a second glance. We’re doing our best to fix that!

Atmosphere

The lobby itself is cozy and rustic, with wood paneling and wrought iron chandeliers. A huge fireplace is the main focus of the room, but you’ll also likely find your breath taken away by the soaring, two-story ceilings. It does get a little echo-y in here, though, so be prepared!

Inside Liberty Tree Tavern

You’ll find six distinct rooms/seating areas inside the restaurant, each named for a notable historical figure. The list includes Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, John Paul Jones, Paul Revere, Betsy Ross, and George Washington.

If you’re not a big fan of history, don’t worry — you won’t be super overwhelmed in here. You may find yourself a little bored by your surroundings, but we encourage everyone to look around and see all the details in this restaurant — there certainly are a lot of them! But enough about that, what are we eating?!

Food

The all-you-care-to-enjoy meal is called the Bill of Fare, and includes roast turkey, pot roast, pork, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and mac and cheese. It’s essentially Thanksgiving dinner every day of the year! There’s also the Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake for dessert, which we guarantee you’ll be thinking about for weeks to come. It all will cost you $45 per adult and $24 per child.

It’s time to eat!

Now, this meal was extra special, because not only did we have the regular Bill of Fare, but we also grabbed the Allergy-Friendly Bill of Fare! We started with the bread and salad for each meal, and for the regular bread, we wish it had been served a little warmer, but otherwise, the taste and texture were delicious, as it was covered in butter and had plenty of herbs.

Regular Rolls

The allergy-friendly rolls were the standard allergy-friendly rolls you’ll find around the resort, so while they’re drier than someone who doesn’t have to eat allergy-friendly meals may be used to, they’re pretty solid!

Allergy-friendly rolls

The salad is allergy-friendly (which is essentially a gluten-free version of the meal, but if you have additional dietary needs, you can let Disney know when you book your reservation), so it was the same for both of our diners. The salad itself isn’t anything out of this world, but we do love the way they balance the vinaigrette with the lettuce itself. Everything was very fresh — no wilted lettuce here — which we really appreciated! It’s very light, which is a great way to combat the heavier main part of the mean.

Our Salad!

Then it was time for the main event! Our turkey was very well cooked — it was moist, seasoned beautifully with different herbs, and totally fell apart on our fork in the best way. As for the pot roast, it was juicy, tender, and flavorful, but we do feel it’s a little forgettable compared to how great other parts of the meal are.

We loved our turkey!

We only say that because when you think of this restaurant, you think of “Thanksgiving food,” which is the turkey and mashed potatoes, not necessarily the pot roast. Speaking of, those mashed potatoes are AMAZING! They’re buttery, creamy, and salted very well. The gravy is also a beautiful compliment to both the turkey and mashed potatoes. It’s your classic gravy, nothing super special or different, but that’s what we love about it!

This gravy is wonderful!

The green beans and stuffing are both solid as well, but again, we feel they’re overshadowed by other things on the plate (but if you love either, you won’t be disappointed). The mac and cheese is simultaneously nothing to write home about, but also something pretty much everyone who enjoys mac and cheese will be happy with. We do wish it tasted a little more homemade rather than like it’s from a giant pot of mac and cheese, but that’s just us being picky!

Mac and cheese!

The allergy-friendly Bill of Fare is essentially made up of the same items as the regular Bill of Fare, but without any gluten. What really stood out to us here was the stuffing, as our gluten-free friend we were with told us it’s nearly impossible to find GOOD gluten-free stuffing. Our friend said it brought them back to when they were able to have gluten, and it was such a comforting, familiar flavor.

The gravy was also pleasantly thick for having no gluten in it, and the mac and cheese was also wonderful. The noodles were perfectly al dente, and it was cheesy, creamy, and so great you likely wouldn’t even notice it’s gluten-free. The mashed potatoes were also very solid, as were the meats, so we were very impressed!

Then it was time for dessert! The Oooey Gooey Toffee Cake never fails to blow our minds, because it’s just SO good. It’s VERY sweet, so you’ll want to be prepared for that, and it’s part of the reason we think it’s best shared with others, and we really appreciate that there’s genuinely plenty of ice cream to go with the rest of the dessert! The cake itself lives up to the name of being oooey gooey, and it’s truly a crowd-pleaser.

The dessert included in the allergy-friendly meal is Johnny Appleseed’s Warm Apple Cake, and we totally loved this! The cake itself is moist without being overly dense, and the apples were similar to the spiced baked apples you can get as a side at Cracker Barrel. That flavor? Impeccable!

It was nostalgic, truly delicious, and a gluten-free dessert we absolutely can recommend!

Magic or Tragic?

This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…

  • You need a break from the hustle and bustle of the theme park. Liberty Tree Tavern is a nice and quiet spot. The lighting is subdued, but not so dark that you can’t read the menu. This is a great spot to enjoy some air conditioning away from the chaos that can be Magic Kingdom on a busy day. Take a break and get off your feet for a while – it feels SO GOOD.
  • You want to see why everyone raves about the Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake. Let’s be honest: we’re probably here 85% for the dessert, and 15% for the rest of the meal. That Ooey Gooey Toffee Cake is HEAVENLY. We know it can be tempting to fill up on Pot Roast and Mac & Cheese, but you simply MUST save room for dessert. Dare we say it’s the best part of the whole experience?
  • You can work up a big appetite. This meal is basically a full Thanksgiving feast. It’s also a traditional family-style dinner, meaning you can go back for seconds (or even thirds) if you want. This is the place for diners who are proud members of the Clean Plate Club – if you prefer a light meal, on the other hand, this probably isn’t the place for you.

You should skip this Disney World spot if…

  • You feel nauseous at the thought of a hot, heavy meal in the middle of your park day. Like we said, you’re getting roasted turkey, pot roast, and oven-roasted pork. Don’t expect a light fish or a lettuce wrap at this restaurant. The food is heavy, and we don’t recommend a ride on Space Mountain directly after dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern.
  • You prefer soft, comfortable seating. This restaurant is designed to look like a stately colonial-style inn. That means the tables and chairs are, well, a little hard. You won’t find any plush chairs or booth seating at this restaurant, so if that’s a big turn-off, this could be worth skipping.
  • You want an elegant or elevated dining experience. For the price, you might anticipate a more upscale dining experience. We’ll be honest – the vibe here is traditional, historical, and a little stuffy. If you’re, say, celebrating a big anniversary or trying to have a romantic dinner, this probably isn’t the place for you.

This spot very rarely lets us down, and we love returning time and time again to grab some of our favorites. Not to mention that it’s one of the least expensive meals around Magic Kingdom, but the quality is fantastic!

We’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to AllEars for the latest Disney news and more!

  1. What this review glosses over is that there was recently a massive downgrade in the recipe for the pot roast. What used to be one of the best dishes at Liberty Tree and Diamond Horseshoe is now just okay. I used to try to eat at one of those every time I was at Magic Kingdom, but losing the good pot roast changes that.
