8 Mistakes Disney World Rookies Make in Magic Kingdom

If you’ve never been to Disney World before, the planning process can seem a little overwhelming. You’ll have to figure out how long you’re staying, where you’re staying, where you’re eating, if you’ll want Lightning Lane Multi Pass, and more. However, you also need to prep yourself for your visit, especially when it comes to Magic Kingdom. So we’re going to tell you the mistakes many Magic Kingdom rookies make

Thinking the whole park is open for Early Theme Park Entry

If you’ll be taking advantage of Early Theme Park Entry (and we highly recommend you do in Magic Kingdom), you’ll need to know that only part of the park will be open during that 30 minutes before opening time.

Typically, you’ll only be able to enter Tomorrowland and Fantasyland during that time. Here’s a full list of rides that are open during Early Theme Park Entry.

Trying to rope drop anything but Fantasyland and Tomorrowland

If you’re taking advantage of rope drop (getting to the park when it opens), you might want to head on over to Adventureland or Frontierland first, but we’ll just tell you now that you’re better off heading to Fantasyland and Tomorrowland.

Why? Well, all those Early Theme Park Entry folks have already been to Fantasyland and Tomorrowland and they’re probably also heading to other parts of the park, meaning wait times for lands other than Fantasyland or Tomorrowland could be high at rope drop.

Thinking you can just walk up to any table service restaurant and be seated

If you’ve read many of our posts, you’ll know we always recommend you make reservations for table service restaurants as early as you can (60 days before the first day of your trip). Why? Well, it’s hard to get a seat otherwise. Restaurants in Magic Kingdom book up fast.

Of course, you can also try to get a table through the Mobile Walk-Up Waitlist, but you’ll still end up waiting for a table, if one is available.

Thinking you can just wing it

Of all the parks in Disney World, Magic Kingdom is the park that requires some strategizing and planning. There are a lot of rides, a lot of entertainment, and more things than you can possibly see and do in a day.

You’ll want to make sure you figure out what your priorities are in Magic Kingdom and focus on those first.

Thinking you can get a good spot for the fireworks at the last minute

If you’ve never visited Magic Kingdom, you’ll want to make the Happily Ever After fireworks a priority. However, don’t just think you can stroll up to the front of the castle and grab a good viewing spot at the last minute.

You’ll notice that some people will literally stake out their fireworks viewing spots HOURS before the show. You can do this or you can opt to pay extra for the Happily Ever After fireworks dessert party that guarantees you a good spot.

Skipping the classic rides

Yes, we know a lot of folks are thrill-seekers or want to ride the newer attractions in Magic Kingdom, but if you miss out on the classics, you’re just missing out.

Make time for Carousel of Progress (trust us, your feet will thank you, as will the rest of your body because it’s a little time inside with air conditioning). The PeopleMover is also a classic that no one should skip out on.

Thinking you can get an alcoholic beverage anywhere

Believe it or not, it wasn’t until recently that you could even GET alcohol in Magic Kingdom. Now, though, you can order beer, wine, cocktails, and other alcoholic beverages at table service restaurants.

However, you won’t find alcoholic beverages served anywhere else outside of table service restaurants. So don’t expect to find a beer or margarita cart or kiosk anywhere in the park.

Not accounting for transportation time

Unless you’re staying at a resort in the Magic Kingdom area, you need to make sure you account for how long it will take to get to and from Magic Kingdom from your hotel. More than likely your transportation options will be limited to buses and depending on where your hotel is located, you need to factor in waiting time and travel time if you need to be in Magic Kingdom at a specific time.

However, even if you are staying at a Monorail resort, you might underestimate travel time at the end of the day if you’re leaving Magic Kingdom. Closing time in Magic Kingdom can be chaotic, especially at the Monorail station. If you can leave a little earlier than everyone else (which could mean ducking out of Happily Ever After early), you should.

Everyone’s Leaving Magic Kingdom and it’s A LOT

If you’re driving, you’ll also need to park at the Transportation and Ticket Center and take the Monorail to Magic Kingdom, so you’ll need to factor that into your planning, too.

You’ll want to keep this in mind if you’re new to visiting Magic Kingdom. We’ll make sure you don’t look like a rookie.
