Breedlove here! If you watch a lot of our AllEars YouTube videos, you’ll know that I’m the resident vegan on the team, and love bringing you all the latest vegan and plant-based food news from Disney World.
Sometimes, it can feel hard to find options in Disney World if you’ve got a diet like mine or have allergies, but I’m here to tell you that they do exist, and I’ll help you find them. I headed over to Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort to grab a new vegan offering from Kona Café, and now I’m telling YOU that whether you’re vegan or not, these are something you need to try!
Kona Café is located right near ‘Ohana and Kona Island (the quick-service version of Kona Café) on the upper level of the Great Ceremonial House (the lobby).
I grabbed the POG Juice Macarons from the Kona Island location and was excited to find that they’re also gluten-free, so if that’s your diet, these are also available to you! Upon first getting them, they looked delicious and were packaged very nicely.
What really surprised me was how authentic the merengue part of the macaron tasted! Real merengue wouldn’t be vegan since it contains eggs and dairy, but these had such a similar texture. However, I will admit that the flavor of the macarons is not exactly what I would call POG, which is Passionfruit, Orange, and Guava. These were very coconut-forward — perhaps bakers had to do that to make them allergy-friendly, and there was still a tartness that made them very nice, but if you’re going in expecting all POG and nothing else, you may be a little disappointed.
I would definitely be interested to see a plant-based macaron offering that rotates at Kona Café because I think they’ve really nailed the most difficult parts of making them vegan! Despite not tasting exactly like POG to me, I still plan to get these and eat them all the time, and I would really enjoy getting to try different variations.
