Whether you’re a new Disney World fan or an old pro, it’s probably no secret that the parks tend to be busy over holiday weekends.

Or at least, that’s how it usually goes! Memorial Day weekend was full of festivities — but it wasn’t quite full of people. Wait times were low, and we didn’t see many crowds. Today, though, seems to be a different story altogether.
Plenty of folks and families take advantage of holiday weekends at Disney World — people are usually off work, kids are off school, and the weather usually isn’t swelteringly hot just yet. This past Memorial Day, we were expecting to see some serious crowds and even more serious wait times — but that wasn’t really the case!

Crowds weren’t anything to write home about compared to what we’ve seen in the past, and wait times didn’t skyrocket during peak times. Park pass availability was wide open, too — none of the parks were sold out or at capacity.
But, Tuesday, May 30th was not quite as calm. In fact, Magic Kingdom is actually sold out today — for the first time in a while!
UPDATE: It appears Disney may have released more availability, as the calendar is now showing green for all parks. Double check before you make your way to Magic Kingdom today!

The last time we saw Magic Kingdom sold out for park pass availability was at the end of April, when April 21st was sold out for theme park ticket holders and hotel guests, and on April 22nd when it was sold out for Annual Passholders.
Things were looking pretty crowded in Magic Kingdom as well, where there was a steady stream of people heading into the park down Main Street, U.S.A.

Not only that, but here’s a look at some of those wait times just an hour or so after the park opened:

So, what’s the real lesson to be learned here? Disney World is unpredictable. Crowds can sneak up on you when you least expect it, and when you are expecting them, they might be nowhere to be found!

It’s because Disney isn’t affordable anymore for the average individual or family. Crunching the numbers with some roommates for a trip this summer– we found it cheaper to take a week trip to Italy and Spain than to go to Disney World for a week!
