Disney Composer Alan Menken Reaches EGOT Status!

Those who grew up with Disney animated classics from the 1980s and 1990s are very familiar with the work of Alan Menken.

According to Theater Mania, the Disney Legend and famed composer behind The Little MermaidBeauty and the BeastAladdin, and MANY other beloved films has officially reached EGOT Status!

His last award needed to achieve EGOT Status was achieved this weekend at the Daytime Emmy Awards, for which he won for “Waiting in the Wings” from the Disney Channel series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.

Those who have achieved “EGOT Status” have won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony Awards in competitive categories over the course of their career. Alan Menken is just the sixteenth person in history to achieve such an honor. He had already received multiple Oscars and Grammys for his work on The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and Pocahontas. He won the Tony Award for Best Original Score in 2012 for his work on the Broadway musical Newsies.

While the vast majority of Menken’s body of work is closely tied to Disney, this is far from the first time Disney has been represented in the body of work of others with EGOT Status. Other EGOT winners associated with Disney include composer Robert Lopez, lyricist Tim Rice, actress Whoopi Goldberg, actress Rita Moreno, actress Helen Hayes, and producer Scott Rudin, who produced films under Disney’s Miramax unit.
