Disney World Files Permit for Iconic Magic Kingdom Attraction

So much is changing in Magic Kingdom, and it’s just hard to wrap your mind around all the updates. A new expansion is coming to Frontierland. A new land is coming to the park. Two rides are currently closed while they get HUGE updates. Even the classic attraction Carousel of Progress is getting a bit of an update.

Yes, Carousel of Progress is getting a new scene with an animatronic Walt Disney, similar to the one we’ve seen in Disneyland. Well, we’re starting to see movement on that project because Disney just filed a new permit for the ride.

Disney filed a permit on February 5th for the address associated with Carousel of Progress in Tomorrowland to “Install FA/FP Systems,” aka fire protection systems. This likely has something to do with the new scene that’s being added to the beginning of the attraction with the Walt Disney animatronic. Here’s concept art of what that new scene will look like.

There’s also a hint hidden in the permit. The filing is by Walt Disney Imagineering, which generally means that this isn’t just a refurbishment project, but probably a change to the show, which we were expecting. Of course, we can’t really tell a lot from the permit’s filing, but we can confirm that SOMETHING will be happening at Carousel of Progress soon.

This is also a good sign that we may see the attraction close soon, while the work begins on it. Disney has not yet confirmed a closing or reopening timeline, though, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
