8 Nasty Surprises You’ll Find On Your Disney World Bill

It’s no secret that Walt Disney World trips are expensive. From theme park tickets and hotel reservations to travel costs and incidentals like meals and souvenirs, there’s a lot to budget for. However, for everything a traveler can think of, there are some hidden costs that are often forgotten.

Cinderella Castle!

These charges, while not hidden in any nefarious way, will often fall through the cracks, with many guests not even realizing they may be owed… until the bill comes!

Booking Hold

When you book a room at a Disney resort, they may put a $100 hold on your credit card on top of what you already owe for the room, along with any other outstanding expenses. This $100 hold is for incidental expenses. Basically, anything you’d buy and charge to your room — like room service, upgraded wifi, or any other charges you haven’t already paid ahead of time. Don’t panic if you see this hefty added fee! Think of this like a deposit you’d put down for an event space. If you DON’T charge anything to your room, you’ll get the $100 back after your stay. But it can be scary to see that $100 charge you weren’t expecting!

Tourist Taxes

Let’s talk about tourist taxes that will bump up that final total for your resort. Those will NOT be refunded after your stay because… taxes. While Florida doesn’t have a statewide hotel tax, the state does authorize local counties to impose taxes of 3%-6% on hotel accommodations and short-term rentals.

  • Tourist Development Tax (TDT): Orange County imposes a 6% TDT on transient rentals, which include hotels, motels, and short-term vacation rentals.
  • Florida Sales and Use Tax: The state of Florida levies a 6% sales tax on most purchases, including accommodations.
  • Orange County Discretionary Sales Surtax: Orange County adds a 0.5% sales surtax, bringing the total sales tax to 6.5%.

The combined 12.5% tax is applied to the total rental charge for the accommodation, including any cleaning fees, for stays of 182 nights or shorter. For example, if a hotel room costs $100 for one night:

  • 6% TDT: $6.00
  • 6.5% Florida Sales Tax: $6.50
  • Total Tax: $12.50
  • Total cost to the traveler: $112.50

To use a specific example, All Star Resort rooms can range anywhere from $150 to $250. Around the 2025 Christmas holiday season, standard rooms were around $228 per night. Using this number, you’re actually looking at paying around an extra $30ish per night on top of what you’re already paying for your room.

No Show Fees

Change your mind about your Disney plans? It might cost you.  If you need to make a resort cancellation, the Disney World website requests that you cancel 30 days out to receive your full refund. Now, there ARE different rules depending on your reservation type.

When it comes to hotel rooms:

  • If you cancel 30 days or more before your scheduled arrival, any and all amounts paid will be refunded, except for any cancellation fees from third-party hotels or suppliers.
  • For cancellations made 2 to 29 days before arrival, a refund will be given, but the $200 cancellation fee per package will be kept by Disney.
  • For cancellations made 1 day or less before arrival, or for no-shows, the full price of the package is non-refundable.

No refunds are given if you leave early, have unused admission tickets, have any unused dining plan credits, orhave any  other partially used vacation features. Any refunds granted at Disney’s discretion after arrival must be requested in writing within 90 days of departure and may be subject to a $25 processing fee. Your refunds will be given back to you in the original payment method.  If you are working with a travel agent, be sure to reach out to them first and know that your refund will be issued through them. Disney is not responsible for how refunds are distributed by travel agents.

When it comes to refunds for special experiences:

  • To avoid a Savi’s Workshop cancellation fee, you must cancel your reservation at least one day (24 hours) in advance to prevent a charge equal to the full price of the experience. If you are a no-show, you will be charged the full cost of the lightsaber building experience. Just so you know, that’s $274.99
  • You’ll receive a cancellation fee for your Private VIP Tour “equal to 2 hours at the booked rate per tour if you do not provide at least a 48-hour notice.”
  • Backstage Magic Tours have a similar cancellation fee. If you don’t show up for your tour AND you don’t cancel at least 48 hours in advance, then you’re just going to have to kiss your money goodbye.
  • Hoop De Doo Revue, Sangria University, Monsieur Paul, Victoria and Albert’s, and more specialty dining experiences require advanced cancellations (not just the regular cancellation policy) so read the fine print!!

Restaurants offering advance reservations do not allow modifications within 2 hours of the reservation time, and most charge a $10 per-person fee to cancel within 2 hours of the reservation time, or if you don’t show up for your reservation. However, some restaurants and dining experiences don’t allow modifications after the reservation is confirmed. These include:

  • Cinderella’s Royal Table
  • Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Review
  • Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Parties: Pre-Party
  • Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Parties: Post-Party
  • Magic Kingdom Fireworks Dessert Parties: Seats & Sweets
  • Rose & Crown Fireworks Dining Package
  • Spice Road Table Fireworks Dining Package
  • Celebration at the Top – Sip, Savor, Sparkle
  • Top of the World Lounge – multiple products.

Automatic Gratuity

While you’re budgeting for your Disney World meals, don’t forget to figure in the server tip! If you’re traveling with a party of 6 people or more, an automatic 18% gratuity will be placed on your bill. Technically, Disney isn’t supposed to charge gratuity if your 6th party member is under the age of three, but it has been known to happen.

It’s totally up to the restaurants’ discretion, so if it happens to you, don’t be surprised. Now, if your server did an OUTSTANDING job and you want to show your appreciation further than 18%? You can always increase that amount as well! Just let your server know!

Don’t be shy to talk over menu options with your server

Peak Season

If you travel during peak tourist seasons like summer, spring break, or the Holiday Season,  is going to mean higher prices in places you might not know to look, including ticket prices.

Prices for Disney World tickets aren’t ever set in stone — especially when it comes to peak season. If you go to Disney’s website and look at their “ticket visit guide,” it’ll show you the standard ticket price point: $119 per day. However, upon closer inspection, there isn’t a ticket as low as that $119 base price until August 2026, and that’s only for Animal Kingdom. For reference, on the same day, it’s $139 for Magic Kingdom. In addition, adding the Park Hopper can cost anywhere from $198 to $264 per ticket, depending on the date.

The Tree of Life

If you’re there during peak seasons, ticket prices will rise (which is why the $119 price doesn’t come in until after schools start back in 2026). If you’re paying for peak prices for your Disney park tickets, double-check on your hotel cost as well. Hotel prices will fluctuate just like the tickets will — hiking up during peak seasons and weekends. Oh, and don’t get us started on surge pricing for food — character meals have been known to bump up pricing during busy seasons, as well.

EPCOT Monorail

Speaking of tickets, the price per day of your ticket technically DECREASES with the more days you spend in the parks. Disney’s tagline for this is “The longer you stay, the less you pay per day.” So Disney’s intentionally trying to give you the vibe that you’re going to “save money” by staying longer — which sounds like a win-win. But, really, it’s a win-win on Disney’s part. If they keep you in the parks longer, they keep you spending more money on food, souvenirs, and other experiences of theirs for longer.

Disney Dining Plan

The Disney dining plan is back in 2026, and the way Disney promotes it, this thing can save you tons of money… if you use it right. At one point in time, that was definitely true. Now, you have to be a little bit more crafty to actually save money using the dining plan.

So if you’re looking for a way to budget for your trip, the Dining Plan CAN actually sink you a little further into a Disney World money pit if you’re not super smart about it. How can you be smart about it? Well, for starters, keep the following in mind:

  • NO CREDIT LEFT BEHIND: Prep ahead of time to use all of your dining credits.
  • GET BANG FOR YOUR BUCK: Buy the most expensive things you can with your credits. Choose the steak and the lobster at table service restaurants, don’t use table service credits on breakfast — the cheapest meal of the day — unless it’s an uber expensive character meal, use snack credits on the most expensive and unique snacks.
Look for the Disney Dining Plan symbol!

However, even with these plans and hacks, you might not be able to break even on your DDP price. The current 2026 prices look like this:

  • For adults, the Quick Service Disney Dining Plan will cost $60.47 per person, per night.
  • For adults, the Standard Disney Dining Plan will cost $98.59 per person, per night.
  • For children ages 3-9, the Quick Service Dining Plan will cost $26.16 per person, per night.
  • For children ages 3-9, the Standard Disney Dining Plan will cost $31.94 per person, per night

There is one major discount to keep in mind, however: For the duration of 2026, you can get a FREE dining plan for kids (ages 3 to 9) when you purchase a Walt Disney Travel Company package that includes a room at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel and a dining plan for each Guest ages 10 and up. Always, always keep a lookout, as Disney will occasionally drop free dining for your entire party as a discount, and that can be a real money saver.

Vacation Packages

Disney Vacation Packages usually consist of tickets, a hotel room, dining, and any extra experiences, all wrapped up in one nice, convenient purchasing bundle. Disney tries to convince you that buying these package bundles is going to save you some serious moolah. And, well, that’s true… sometimes.

Dumbo

For example, Disney likes to put in the big, bold print that you can save big if you’re getting a vacation bundle for a 6-night stay. But in reality? That bundle is still available for you if you’re only planning on staying 2 nights, too. So no, you don’t have to book a 6-night trip to get that deal. Disney just uses that as an “example” in their marketing, that just so happens to kind of look like a requirement? But it’s not. If you can’t or don’t want to do a week-long trip, you DO NOT HAVE TO. You can get the same deal when you’re staying fewer nights.

Lesson here? Always read the fine print! Don’t skip out on a potentially great package deal just because you’re staying fewer nights than Disney would like you to. Read over the details and check to see if this deal can still apply to you and your travel party.

Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway

Remember — Disney wants to keep you on their property just as much, if not more, than you want to stay there, because that means more moolah for them

Previously Free Perks

Finally, if you haven’t been to Disney in a while (or it’s your first time),  you need to be careful when it comes to previously FREE perks, including:

MagicBands: Once upon a time, you could score a free MagicBand for staying at a Disney resort. This is no longer the case — you must pay for your Magic Bands now. MagicBand prices currently range from $34.99 to $54.99.

MagicBand+

Disney’s Magical Express: The free — AKA previously included — way to get from the Orlando Airport to your Disney World Hotel ended at the beginning of 2022. Instead, you now have to pay for a bus transportation service, use a taxi or rideshare, or rent a car.

We miss you Magical Express!

Skip the Line Passes: Just like the others, this one isn’t new news, but a reminder never hurts. Traditional Fast Passes are long gone. Disney World’s current Lightning Lane system provides access to “Lightning Lanes” for rides so guests can bypass Standby lines for select attractions through an extra purchase made on the My Disney Experience app. This optional service helps guests maximize their time in the four Disney World theme parks:  Magic Kingdom, EPCOT, Disney’s Hollywood Studios, and Disney’s Animal Kingdom.

Expedition Everest Lightning Lane

There are three types of Lightning Lanes:

  • Lightning Lane Multi Pass
  • Lightning Lane Single Pass
  • And Lightning Lane Premier Pass

They all function differently, but there was once a time many years ago that these passes were included with your park ticket
