Earlier this year, we shared some news with you that indicated attendance at Universal Orlando was starting to rebound quicker than at Disney World.

Now we’ve gotten an update in terms of what attendance is looking like at Universal’s open parks in both Orlando and Japan.
Earlier this year, Universal Orlando reopened after being closed for an extended period of time due to COVID-19. Universal Studios Japan also reopened in June.

Now, we’ve got a better picture of what attendance is looking like at Universal’s open theme parks in both Orlando and Japan. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Comcast CEO Brian Roberts has indicated that attendance at Universal Orlando and Universal Japan “hovers around 25%.”

Roberts noted that they can invest in theme parks at the right time, “but not now.” It does not appear that all investment in Universal’s theme parks has stopped, however. We’ve seen construction continue on projects like the Jurassic Park coaster. Roberts indicated that they have “slowed down some investments” in the Universal theme parks, but that he hopes they’ll come back and he wants them to come back.

Despite the cancellation of Halloween Horror Nights, we have seen some new experiences — like the Halloween Horror Nights tribute store — popping up in Universal Orlando. Two Halloween Horror Nights Houses will also soon be available to guests during the day.

But, construction on other projects, like Universal’s new Orlando theme park — Epic Universe — has in been delayed. And several Universal Orlando employees have been furloughed or terminated. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Roberts has stressed the importance of a coronavirus vaccine for business to bounce back. He also touted Universal’s theme parks as one of the “fastest-growing areas of Comcast’s business, which gives him confidence about the rebound ahead.”

Roberts noted that he is “optimistic for the long term.” All of this comes on the heels of Disney’s CFO indicating that Disney will continue to invest in its theme parks, but that their strategy has been to focus on prioritizing projects that were already “in flight.” It is interesting to hear the viewpoint of these two executives and see how each company is handling the current situation. We’ll definitely keep you posted on more news about Universal Orlando and let you know what we find.
