REVIEW: It May Be Tucked Away, But This Disney World Restaurant Is Worth a Stop

Sometimes, Disney World restaurants can be a bit tucked away and easy to walk past. We don’t want you missing out on yummy food, so we are always stopping by to review restaurants and making sure you know about all of your options!

Animal Kingdom

Here at AllEars, we know all the ins and outs of Disney restaurants — including where you should definitely eat, and where you should skip. We recently stopped by Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery at Disney’s Animal Kingdom and are bringing you our FULL review!

Background

Kusafiri Coffee Shop & Bakery is a bit hidden in the Africa section of Disney’s Animal Kingdom. You will find it near the entrance to Kilimanjaro Safaris, across from the bathrooms. Keep an eye out for the register or the window in the wall to know you have found the right spot! You can grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner from this window-service restaurant, but make sure to double-check the hours, as it isn’t always open the entire time Animal Kingdom is open.

Here’s what you need to know about dining at this restaurant.

Atmosphere

The restaurant is quaint and humble — there isn’t a whole lot to it, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t worth a stop! You place your order at the register and then pick up your food from the window. There is one small seating area next to the window inside the tower-looking structure, or you can also look for additional seating near Dawa Bar. Of course, you can also head over to Tamu Tamu Refreshments for additional options as well.

But enough about that, what are we eating?!

Food & Drinks

We started with the Harissa Chicken Wrap for $10.99. It is made with chilled tandoori rotisserie chicken with harissa mayonnaise in a flour tortilla. It is served with seasoned house-made chips. We thought this wrap was very fresh and crunchy. It is served chilled, making it a great choice for a hot day. The carrots inside the wrap have a light, creamy dressing, and you also get a slight tang from the green peppers.

Harissa Chicken Wrap

The wrap doesn’t have much seasoning, though. Depending on your tastes, that could be a good or bad thing. While this wrap would be great for picky eaters, if you are looking for a punch of harissa flavor, you won’t find it here. It was served with plain kettle chips (no seasoning). They were fine, but we wish the wrap had been served with the seasoned house-made chips instead.

We also grabbed the Plant-based Picadillo Bowl for $12.99. It is a plant-based picadillo featuring Impossible® Beef, served on jollof rice with kuchumbari tomato salad and plant-based aïoli. We could have been fooled into thinking this was real meat! It lacked a bit of the chew real meat has, but it still tasted surprisingly “meaty.”

Plant-based Picadillo Bowl

This dish had way more flavor than the Harissa Chicken Wrap. There were layers of flavor with a pleasant spice. The aïoli drizzle was creamy and added a great depth to the dish. The rice tasted slightly undercooked, but it was still flavorful and tasty.

The accompanying salad was lightly dressed, helping balance the spice of the rest of the dish. The salad was very fresh, and the crunchy texture balanced well with the softness of the meat and rice. Overall, this was our favorite of the two dishes, but if you have a picky eater, the Harissa Chicken Wrap would be the better choice.

As a dessert, we grabbed the Chocolate Twist for $6.49. This treat was packed with chocolate flavor.

Chocolate Twist

The pastry was light and flaky, with chocolate and a bit of creamy custard folded inside. It is sweet but not overly heavy, making it an excellent choice for your park day.

Chocolate Twist

To drink, we tried the Ngumu Jungle Juice for $17.50. It is made with SVEDKA Vodka, Bols Peach Schnapps Liqueur, and Tusker’s Famous Jungle Juice. This is essentially an adult POG juice (passionfruit, orange, and guava) with a slight peach note from the Peach Schnapps. However, the most prominent flavor is the POG juice. You do get a bit of burn from the vodka. This is refreshing, fruity, and sweet.

Magic or Tragic?

This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…

  • You are looking for a quick and easy meal. Kusafiri is super fast since it only offers a limited menu. We ordered and got our food super quickly. It would be perfect for a quick meal when you are under time constraints.
  • Too many options scare you. Sometimes, too many options can be daunting. Luckily, Kusafiri only has three main entrees, so you don’t have to make too many decisions.
  • You are looking for lighter meal options or a tasty plant-based meal. We liked that the meals here felt lighter and healthier than other options like chicken tenders or burgers.

You should skip this Disney World spot if…

  • You are looking for a sit-down option or somewhere with dedicated indoor seating. While you can find seating at Dawa Bar or at Tamu Tamu Refreshments, Kusafiri is a grab-and-go option. If you are looking for table service, try Yak & Yeti or Tiffins Restaurant.
  • You want somewhere with a lot of menu options. Kusafiri has a pretty limited menu. Great if you don’t like making decisions or want your food quickly, but not as great if your group is looking for more options. Places like Satu’li Canteen or Flame Tree Barbecue offer more options.
  • You want to eat somewhere quiet. You could always take your food to go and find a quiet area nearby, but if you sit close to Kusafiri it can be pretty chaotic. With all the people and live entertainment nearby, it can be a bit loud.

Menus: Breakfast/Brunch, Lunch/Dinner
Services: Kiosk, Take Out or Walk-up Window

Overall, we had a decent meal at Kusafiri Coffee Shop and Bakery. Our favorite items we got were the Plant-based Picadillo Bowl and the Chocolate Twist. The Harissa Chicken Wrap was also tasty if you are not expecting lots of flavor. The Ngumu Jungle Juice would also be a great alcoholic option if you love POG juice.
