There are tons of Disney World “staples” when it comes to dining around the resort. We’ve also learned the hard way, just because something is well known doesn’t mean it’s a truly good meal.
Quincy at ‘Ohana!
Over the years, it could be argued that ‘Ohana is Disney World’s most famous table service restaurant. The Polynesian-themed restaurant has gone through several changes since it opened in 1995, and we recently stopped by to see if the table service still deserves its popular reputation!
Background
‘Ohana has been open since 1995, and it has developed a big reputation!
‘Ohana
It’s located at Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort and continues the resort’s Polynesian theme throughout the restaurant. Here’s what you need to know about dining at this restaurant.
Atmosphere
The restaurant is large and overlooks the Seven Seas Lagoon! If you squint, you can even see Cinderella Castle in the distance.
Views from the window!
The restaurant is lively and features live entertainment throughout dinner. During breakfast, you can meet characters like Lilo, Stitch, and Mickey Mouse.
Live entertainment!
If you go at the right time, you can even watch the Happily Ever After fireworks show, and they play the music throughout the restaurant. But enough about that, what are we eating?!
Food & Drinks
The restaurant offers a pre-fixe menu and serves all-you-care-to-enjoy family-style food in skillets. For dinner, adults will pay $67 for dinner and children (ages 3-9) will pay $44. We tried the traditional menu as well as the plant-based menu during our stop by! First, we tried the ‘Ohana Signature Rolls with honey butter.
The bread!
This has a subtle pineapple aroma and wasn’t overly sweet. It was a bit dry, but it was still flavorful. The honey butter definitely saves it by adding a richness that balances the dryness. It’s a unique start to the meal and fits the Polynesian theme nicely.
Have some!
The plant-based rolls were more basic and dry. The vegan butter helps as well, but these have less personality overall compared to the other rolls.
The Plant Based Rolls
The Mixed Salad features mixed greens with tomato, cucumber, shredded bell pepper, and citrus vinaigrette. It was tangy and light, and similar to Sebastian’s Bistro key lime dressing. It was slightly sweet and very refreshing between the heavier dishes. It offered a great flavor balance and was a nice starter. The plant-based salad was the same but came with a local citrus dressing instead.
The salad!
The Ohana Dinner Skillet comes with pork dumplings tossed in garlic-chili sauce, honey-coriander chicken wings, wood fire-grilled black pepper-teriyaki beef, peel-n-eat shrimp coated with ‘Ohana seasoning, grilled chicken with guava-pineapple glaze, ‘Ohana noodles with teriyaki, and stir-fry vegetables!
The ‘Ohana Dinner Skillet!
Starting off, the pork dumplings tossed in garlic-chili sauce we great! They have a sticky and sweet-salty glaze with a Polynesian twist. The filling was savory and balanced out with the sauce. These were a favorite at the meal, but you can order them at Tambu Lounge.
The pork dumplings!
The grilled chicken was cooked right in the in-house smoker! They have a heavy smoke aroma and flavor. They were rubbed with a dry spice blend, similar to BBQ dry rub. We thought they were super tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The smoke can be overpowering, but it was the overall standout protein. The guava-pineapple glaze was very sweet and fruity, more like teriyaki without soy.
The grilled chicken!
The chicken wings have a sticky, sweet-savory glaze and are lightly battered. They pull cleanly off the bone. Plus, they are tender and juicy. The sweet glaze balances well with the savoriness, making for some very good chicken wings!
The wings!
The grilled beef was smoked and with a strong peppery flavor. The sauce was a sticky-sweet teriyaki, and it paired nicely with beef. Honestly, this was cooked a bit too long, making it chewy and dry. It was a bit disappointing for the hype. It was still flavorful but overly tough.
The beef!
The peel-and-eat shrimp were large, well-cooked, and not chewy! The seasoning was reminiscent of Old Bay. It was salty, savory, and had a bit of spice. They were high-quality and fun to eat, though pretty messy, so be aware!
Peel and eat shrimp!
As far as the vegetables go, the current mix includes baby corn and water chestnuts. The famous broccolini was removed from the menu, which was super disappointing. The current veggies were slightly overcooked and seasoned like everything else. They added a much-needed balance to a heavy meal, but they are less impressive than before.
The vegetables!
The famous ʻOhana noodles with teriyaki are served in both the Plant-Based Skillet and the Regular Dinner Skillet, similarly to the vegetables. They’re salty, sweet, and truly addictive! They are a familiar caramelized soy and teriyaki flavor that ties the meal together. These are still worth the hype after all these years, but they’re available at Tambu Lounge as well.
THE NOODLES!
In the Plant-Based Skillet, you can find the noodles, with the same stir-fry vegetables, and edamame dumplings tossed in garlic-chili sauce, guava-pineapple glazed “chicken,” plant-based sausage, and black pepper-teriyaki plant-based beef and broccoli.
The Plant-Based Skillet Meats!
The edamame dumplings are new to us since they were recently added to the menu, and Breedlove (our resident plant-based eater) would honestly come back just for them. There are actual pieces of edamame inside, not a puréed filling, and they taste fresh and light with a great garlic chili bite. They were just as good as the pork dumplings!
The edamame dumplings!
The guava pineapple-glazed “chicken” sits squarely in the teriyaki realm. Breedlove is not usually a big fan of fake meats, but this was genuinely delicious. The plant-based sausage is the same variety used all across Walt Disney World, sometimes as a hot dog, but the preparation here makes a difference. It was cooked well, flavorful, and carried that same sweetness you’ll find in most of the dishes on this menu.
The “chicken”!
The black pepper teriyaki “beef” was also sweet but balanced. The texture didn’t throw us off, and overall it tasted great. For a menu that’s traditionally built around meat, there’s a nice range of plant-based options that recreate the experience without relying on just one imitation protein. The broccoli was fine, fresh, well-cooked, and a nice complement to the other components. It was also the same broccoli we mentioned earlier.
The “beef”
To wrap up the meal, we tried the ‘Ohana Bread Pudding that comes a la mode with a homemade caramel sauce. This is easily one of the most famous things on the menu.
THE ‘Ohana Bread Pudding
This was a warm, soft, pineappley bread pudding with caramel drizzle and vanilla ice cream. It’s one of the best in Disney World, though very similar to the one you can get at Sebastian’s. It’s a perfect portion. It isn’t overly sweet, and it’s well-balanced and rich. It is a huge highlight of the meal, for obvious reasons!
A closer look!
For our plant-based eaters, you’ll get the Bread Pudding with a soy-based frozen dessert. The bread pudding was interestingly served with chocolate soy ice cream. We thought that sounded strange at first, but it actually worked well. It’s definitely a point of difference from Sebastian’s Bistro, which serves its version with a carafe of plant-based caramel sauce you can pour yourself.
The plant-based bread pudding!
If we’re being honest, Sebastian’s plant-based dessert is way better.
Magic or Tragic?
This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…
You want an iconic Disney experience
You love an all-you-can-enjoy meal
Or you love live entertainment and fireworks views
This restaurant offers a great variety, an iconic experience, and an atmosphere that serves as a major draw. The food quality has improved post-pandemic, but it isn’t consistently amazing. At $67 per adult, it’s significantly more expensive than Sebastian’s Bistro, which offers a similar experience for $39. Sebastian’s Bistro is going to be our recommendation for better value and comparable food quality.
Thanks for the experience!
It feels like a Disney classic you should try once, but not necessarily repeat unless you’re craving nostalgia. If you really want some of the best items from ‘Ohana, go to Tambu Lounge instead. In the meantime, we’ll be on the lookout for more restaurant updates from Disney World and beyond. Make sure you stay tuned to AllEars for the latest Disney news and more!
