Destination D23 certainly gave us a LOT of news, but some of it wasn’t what we were hoping to hear.

Don’t get us wrong, we’re excited about what’s to come, but there’s one massive announcement in particular that had us confused last year, and this year we’re STILL confused. So let’s make sure we’re all on the same page, shall we?
If you haven’t heard about all the announcements, Emma went to Destination D23. She made a video about all of the news that you can watch right here!
Now, to start us off, let’s back it up real quick. In 2022, Disney teased at the D23 Expo that a Magic Kingdom expansion was a blue sky project (meaning that it’s something they’re thinking about, not something set in stone).

Disney said the expansion could include things like a villain’s land, Coco-themed land, or an Encanto-themed land. We got some vague concept art, but that was about it.

However, at this year’s Destination D23 event, we learned that Dinoland U.S.A. will be turned into a new area with potential Encanto and Indiana Jones theming. So what does that mean for the Magic Kingdom expansion? Here’s what we were told this year.

Disney stated they want to expand Magic Kingdom in a transformative way, like Pandora in Animal Kingdom and Galaxy’s Edge in Disney’s Hollywood Studios. The expansion was called the biggest thing Disney has ever done in Magic Kingdom, even bigger than the New Fantasyland expansion.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad was specifically mentioned as an area that can be played around with. Disney also said that there are plenty of places to bring big stories to life.

Josh D’Amaro, the Chairman of Disney Parks, Experiences and Products stated that Disney is getting ready to “go into overdrive at the Magic Kingdom,” and that the size and scale of the expansion is “exactly what every Imagineer dreams about.” While Disney’s ideas are in a good place, according to them, there’s still a lot of work to do.

And…that’s all we got. No, we’re not kidding, those are the only things Disney told us. So do we really know more than last year? Not really, we just know that Disney is actually working on the expansion. And THIS is why we’re still confused over here. We don’t know any more of what Disney is planning to put in the expansion (depending on how you look at it, we may actually know less), and we have no new hints to go off of.

Rest assured, we here at AllEars keep an eye on all the latest Disney news, so as soon as we hear something, we’ll let you know!
