NEWS: Cruises to Alaska May Resume Sooner Than 2022

Earlier this month, the CDC released new guidelines that may enable some cruises to resume in the U.S. by mid-July.

But, one barrier has still existed for Alaskan cruises, as Canada currently has a suspension of cruises through early 2022 and ships must dock in the country before heading to Alaska. A bill that would let cruise ships travel to Alaska without stopping in Canada was introduced back in March and we now have an update.

According to Anchorage Daily News, the U.S. House of Representatives has approved the “Alaska Tourism Recovery Act” bill, allowing large ships to sail to Alaska and bypass Canada ports. Now, the bill awaits the signature of President Biden before it becomes effective.

The bill will only temporarily suspend the need to stop in Canada for ships traveling to Alaska, with the exemption ending in February 2022 (upon which cruising may resume in Canada for large ships).

Currently, all of Disney Cruise Line sailings to Alaska have been canceled through 2022, but that could change once the new bill is signed.
