There are a lot of things that used to be in Disney World that were ultimately retired.

That’s to be expected, as the parks are always evolving and growing, but there are some things we really miss (RIP Great Movie Ride). Now it seems that a super popular EPCOT attraction from the ’80s may make a comeback if this Hollywood director gets his way.

According to Deadline, the director of the recent Haunted Mansion film, Justin Simien, would love to adapt Michael Jackson’s Captain EO attraction (that used to be in the Imagination Pavilion) into a movie!

Captain EO

For those of you who are Gen Z babies or have no idea what Captain EO is, let’s review. Captain EO, played by Michael Jackson, ran from September 12th, 1986 until July 6th, 1994 inside the Imagination Pavilion and starred Captain EO in a colorful 3D theater attraction.

Imagination Pavilion

The 3D science fiction film told the story of Captain EO and an electronic band of mythical space creatures who undergo a magical transformation and aid Jackson in conquering the evil forces of darkness.

Michael Jackson wrote two songs for the film, and it was a big hit with audiences. Many people miss this attraction, including Justin Simien, who in an interview at Comic-Con said that while he knows the attraction is out of commission, he is ready. “I need some singing and I need some dancing and I need some jerry curl juice in outer space immediately.

  1. The only way this could work is to make it animated in the style of Spiderverse (so MJ can still be EO), and to use clips of MJ’s voice and AI (trained really really well using MJs voice) to voice the animated EO.

    Otherwise, it shouldn’t be done.
MJ is Captain EO, and nobody else should play EO in a live action film.

  2. It would be a difficult thing to do, EO was pretty dark. Awesome but dark. I saw the original show when at its debut. I would have been six or seven. Saw it again when it again several times during its original run. Took my wife to see it when it came back briefly. When EO made its debut Michael Jackson was at his prime. Hottest ticket in the world. It would be hard to match that today. I’m not saying it cannot be done, but we are talking about iconic 80’s that younger generations may not understand. The message was love, always will be.
