3 Things I Wish I’d Known Before Going to Isle of Berk in Epic Universe

Going to Isle of Berk for the first time is a lot like stepping straight into the movie…in the best way possible.

Isle of Berk

The moment you enter Isle of Berk, it feels like you’ve been dropped into the world of How to Train Your Dragon at Universal. It’s stunning, it’s busy, and there’s so much happening at once that it’s easy to miss some key details if you don’t know what to expect.

How To Train Your Dragon — Isle of Berk is easily one of the most exciting parts of Epic Universe, and stepping into it for the first time genuinely feels like walking straight into the world of How to Train Your Dragon. But as immersive and impressive as it is, I walked away with a few “I really wish I’d known that ahead of time” moments.

Hiccup’s Wing Gliders

Not because anything was bad, but because a little bit of preparation would’ve made the experience even smoother. With that being said, here are three things I wish I’d known before visiting Isle of Berk.

The Food Here Is Way More Substantial Than “Theme Park Basic”

One of the biggest surprises in Isle of Berk is that the food isn’t just an afterthought — it actually feels like part of the world. A lot of theme park areas have the standard lineup of “here’s your chicken tenders, here’s your pretzel, moving on,” but Berk leans much harder into hearty, Viking-style comfort food that feels like it belongs in the world you’re standing in.

Delicious

This is the kind of place where you’re not just grabbing a snack to hold you over; no, you can actually sit down and have something filling that feels themed, intentional, and honestly a little more elevated than you’d expect for a brand-new theme park area. If you’re planning to spend a big chunk of your day here, it’s worth budgeting both the time and appetite for a real meal, not just something you eat while speed-walking to the next attraction — although we’d totally count one of those delicious Mac & Cheese Cones as a full meal on the go!

Valka’s Vegan Burger

And because Isle of Berk is going to be one of the most popular areas in Epic Universe, food spots here are going to stay busy. Knowing ahead of time that the dining is more than “quick bite fuel” helps you plan smarter, whether that means eating here at an off time, or making it your main meal stop instead of an afterthought.

Meatballs

Just be certain that you’re not waiting too late in the day before places like Mead Hall cut off their seating for the night!

The Details Are the Point — Slow Down, or You’ll Miss the Best Parts!

Isle of Berk is one of those worlds where the atmosphere is doing so much of the heavy lifting that if you rush through it like a checklist, you’re going to miss what makes it special. This isn’t just a backdrop for rides, it’s an environment that feels alive.

Beer at Mead Hall

The scale alone is impressive, but it’s the smaller touches that really sell it: the carved woodwork, the little Viking humor tucked into signs, the way that Berk sounds, as well as the way it’s designed to feel like a real village perched on the edge of an adventure. It’s the kind of place where looking up matters just as much as looking straight ahead! In fact, go ahead and just plan to keep your head on a swivel — even when it comes to watching the world’s signature show.

Untrainable Dragon Entrance

My biggest piece of advice is to give yourself permission to wander. Take the long way. Do a lap without a goal. Pause and actually absorb what Universal built here, because Isle of Berk is at its best when you treat it like an experience, not just a place you pass through to get to the next ride.

Timing Changes Everything

If there’s one practical thing I wish I’d known going in, it’s that Isle of Berk is one of those worlds where when you visit matters almost as much as what you do there.

Toothless!

Mid-day, it’s going to feel packed! Not just because it’s popular, but because the layout naturally funnels people into certain pathways. Food lines spike, attraction waits grow quickly, and it can start to feel like you’re navigating a very beautiful, very crowded Viking village. I mean, when in Berk, right?!

Fyre Drill

Don’t forget you can avoid those longer lines by opting to mobile order at certain restaurants like Spit Fyre Grill or planning to grab one of the back section seats in The Untrainable Dragon theater (which I think are the best seats in the house, truth be told).

Take a few bites and save the rest for later if you want!

But early in the morning or later in the evening can be a completely different vibe. Berk’s real estate has some room to breathe; you notice more details, you’re not fighting the same level of congestion, and it feels more immersive overall. If you can prioritize Berk at rope drop or circle back later in the day, you’ll probably have a smoother, more enjoyable experience.

Honestly, deciding beforehand to prioritize the rides and character meet and greet opportunities either way early or later in the day could be your saving grace for your visit.

We have DRAGONS!

Basically, Isle of Berk rewards a little strategy at play here. It’s not a place you want to accidentally squeeze into the busiest part of your afternoon if you can help it, and it’s one you want to experience when you can actually take it all in!

Isle of Berk

At the end of the day, Isle of Berk really is one of those theme park worlds that lives up to the hype, but it’s also the kind of place where a little bit of know-how makes a huge difference. If you go in expecting just another quick walkthrough, you might miss how much is packed into it: the surprisingly substantial food, the insane level of detail that’s best appreciated when you slow down, and the way the entire experience shifts depending on when you visit. Berk isn’t just somewhere you check off between rides; it’s somewhere you’ll actually want to spend time. And if you approach it with even a little strategy, it goes from “wow, that was cool” to “okay…I need to come back here again!” in an instant.

  1. You know, it would have been a lot more helpful hint if the very nice people in the hotels at Universal would’ve told us that you have to have separate Universal Express Passes for Epic Universe. For some reason, no one told us this and we were stuck with 3 hour ride lengths at the park. Often, it seems like the also wonderful cast members, managers, crews etc tend to keep you more informed about issues like this than Universal. But, perhaps, I’m more biased towards Disney. As a word to the wise, be sure to get your Epic Express passes if you intend to use that as a separate purchase.
