The Disney World Hotel People Are AVOIDING Until Late 2027 (and Why)

There’s one Disney World hotel that people keep asking us about lately, and we feel like we need to pull you aside and have a real talk before you book it.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort

If you’re planning a stay at Disney’s Contemporary Resort or even just considering it, here’s the headline you need to know first. The ongoing refurbishment at the Contemporary has officially been extended again and is now expected to continue through late 2027, meaning construction could be part of your stay for the next couple of years. We’re not here to be dramatic, but if you’re spending serious money on a Disney hotel, this is the kind of inside info we’d want a friend to tell us before we lock anything in.

Disney’s Contemporary Resort is iconic for a reason. You can walk to Magic Kingdom, the monorail literally runs through the building, and it has that classic Disney energy that makes people fall in love with it over and over again. Normally, it’s one of those hotels we’re quick to recommend, especially if Magic Kingdom is your main focus.

Right now, though, the big thing to know is that the Contemporary is still very much under refurbishment, and that timeline has been extended again. Construction started back in September 2024, mainly focusing on Bay Lake Tower and the Convention Center.

At first, Disney said everything would be done by Summer 2025. Then that shifted to July 2026. Now, the most recent update says refurbishment work will continue through late 2027.

Specifically, Disney’s website warns, “September 2024 Through Late 2027 —
Refurbishment work will occur in phases throughout select areas of Disney’s Contemporary Resort, including the atrium, Bay Lake Tower and the Main Tower. The Main Tower will undergo exterior maintenance beginning March 23, 2026, which may impact views from various locations throughout the Resort hotel and, at times, require alternate paths of travel. Guests may see or hear construction during daytime hours.”

That means if everything actually wraps up on time, the Contemporary will have been dealing with construction for nearly three years. That’s a long time for a deluxe resort that people are paying premium prices to stay at.

Disney has also been pretty clear that guests may see and hear construction during their stay. Work is happening in phases throughout select areas of the resort, including the atrium, Bay Lake Tower, and Main Tower. Though construction won’t impact much, it could mean noise during the day.

There are also scheduled closures for certain amenities at different points, like the Bay Cove Pool, Cove Bar, and whirlpool spa at Bay Lake Tower in early 2026. These spots have been closed since January 26th, 2026, and the refurbishment work there is set to last through early May 2026. Other pools will stay open, but it’s still something to factor in.

Plus, from late March 2026 through late May 2026, exterior elevator landing repairs are taking place at Bay Lake Tower.

AND from March 30th through May 1st, 2026, the Skyway Bridge that connects Bay Lake Tower and the Contemporary Main Tower will be CLOSED from 9 AM to 5 PM every Monday through Friday. You’ll need to use alternate paths of travel at times, and you may see or hear construction work. The bridge is expected to be open, however, during weekday evenings and all day on the weekends.

Now let’s talk about the price, because this is where a lot of people pause. Staying at the Contemporary is not cheap. Standard rooms can easily start in the high hundreds per night, and depending on the season or view, that number can climb fast. Bay Lake Tower villas can cost even more. When you’re spending that kind of money, you’re probably expecting everything to feel calm, polished, and fully operational.

Beautiful new Bay Lake Tower Rooms

To be fair, the Contemporary still has some huge perks. Being able to walk back from Magic Kingdom at the end of the night is a game-changer. Monorail access makes getting around incredibly easy. Dining options like California Grill and Chef Mickey’s are still major draws, and some of the refurbished rooms look really nice.

The issue is the overall experience. Construction noise during the day, blocked views, and closed or adjusted amenities can take away from that deluxe resort feel. Even if your room itself is great, it can be frustrating to feel like you’re paying top dollar while navigating construction walls and hearing work happening around you.

That’s why a lot of Disney experts and frequent visitors are choosing to wait until the refurbishment is completely finished before booking the Contemporary again. Waiting until late 2027 means you’re much more likely to get the experience you’re actually paying for.

Chef Mickey’s

If you’re set on staying near Magic Kingdom, there are other strong options to consider in the meantime, but they come with their own construction. The Polynesian Village Resort is on the monorail loop, but construction is ongoing there through 2026. This work includes some reconfiguration of the front entrance roadway and bus area. Plus, due to exterior maintenance, the views of the Seven Seas Lagoon from ‘Ohana may be partially or completely obstructed during this time.

Over at the Grand Floridian, renovations are continuing in select areas (including the covered entrance) through early 2027. You may hear work during daytime hours or need to take alternate paths of travel. The Grand Floridian Cafe will be closed from mid-July through October 2026 for a “refresh.” Brunch will temporarily move to Citricos during that time.

You could also look at other deluxe or moderate resorts and put the savings toward dining, souvenirs, or another trip down the line.

The Contemporary will absolutely be worth revisiting once everything is done. We just want you to have all the info now, before you commit.

We’ll be on the lookout for additional hotel changes and updates you need to know about. In the meantime, make sure you stay tuned to AllEars for the latest Disney news and more!
