HUGE changes are coming to Magic Kingdom in Disney World, and we recently got an update on some of those changes.

A massive Cars expansion called Piston Peak is coming to Frontierland. As a result, Tom Sawyer Island and Rivers of America will close on July 7th. Meanwhile, Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is currently going through a massive refurbishment, and part of that includes making the ride fit into the concept of Piston Peak.
So how exactly does Disney plan on doing that? Well, there are a few details being added to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to make it fit in with Piston Peak.

For starters, Disney will be using trees to create a barrier between the Cars expansion and other parts of Frontierland and Liberty Square. At Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, “soaring geysers” will be added that will stretch into the trails of the off-road rally ride in the new area, blending the two areas seamlessly together.

There will also be rainbow pools (which were part of the original concept for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad before it was constructed) that will meld Big Thunder Mountain Railroad into the new Cars ride. Subtle tire treads are also planned for the area.

According to Imagineers, you will also be able to walk through the Big Thunder Mountain Railroad geyser field for the first time and get a good look at it, and see those pathways and rainbow pools around the attractions.

Now, these aren’t the only updates you’ll see at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. We’ve also seen the track being replaced, which should provide a smoother ride. Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is scheduled to be out of commission throughout the rest of the year, but we’ll let you know when Disney announces a reopening date.
