Which Rides Are Permanently CLOSING for the ‘Cars’ Expansion in Magic Kingdom?

Massive changes are in store for Magic Kingdom over the next few years and we’re letting you know what to look out for!

Frontierland

Last year it was not only revealed that a Villains Land is coming to Disney World’s Magic Kingdom, but that a Cars expansion would also be introduced to Frontierland, as well. While the timeline on the Villains Land has been vague, we do know that serious construction on the Cars expansion will begin this year. With that in mind, we want to go over which attractions Magic Kingdom will be losing in the process.

Let’s start with the basics. We know that the Cars expansion is coming to Frontierland — not replacing it. The new Frontierland area will feature two new Cars-themed attractions, with one being described as a “thrilling rally race through the mountain” and the other described as more family-friendly for “smaller racers”.

When it was first announced, there was some speculation that Frontierland would need to remove Big Thunder Mountain Railroad to make way for the new space. However, rest assured — despite its long refurbishment, Big Thunder Mountain isn’t going anywhere. There are, however, two attractions that ARE facing permanent closures.

It was announced last year that the new Cars expansion will occupy the space where Rivers of America currently sits. That means all of the water, theming, and attractions within the Rivers of America are going away for good.

The most notable loss will be Tom Sawyer Island, which will close at some point this year. This island is a giant-sized playground geared to younger guests and families and was inspired by the works of Mark Twain. It’s only accessible by log raft across the Rivers of America and was the only version left in the United States after Disneyland’s island switched to a pirate theme several years ago.

While not the most popular attraction at Magic Kingdom, Tom Sawyer Island was an ideal place to get away from the crowds and revel in a classic Disney theme park atmosphere.

Needless to say, Liberty Square Riverboat will also be closing permanently as it will no longer have a river to sail upon.

This slow-moving 20-minute boat ride aboard a real steam-powered riverboat takes passengers on a lap around the Rivers of America while offering great views of the park.

Relaxing, spacious, and an icon of the park, many will be sad to see it go. We could also see its closure this year.

While the future Cars expansion is exciting, it’s still sad to see one of the most beautiful areas of Magic Kingdom disappear for good. These are also not the only changes coming to Disney World, as Disney announced tons of new rides, lands, and experiences coming to Disney World in the future.
