It’s almost time to set sail!

The Disney Treasure cruise ship is preparing to take its maiden voyage — but first, we’re getting a FULL LOOK at this ship in person. We can’t wait to see all the restaurants, lounges, and shops, but we’re especially excited about the new Moana stage show that will make its debut on the Treasure!
The new Moana stage show coming to the Disney Treasure is called “Disney The Tale of Moana.” It will have “set design and music bursting with elements of Pacific Islands culture” and “will immerse audiences in a transformational adventure across land and sea.”

We got to check out a sneak preview of this new show and now we’re sharing what we saw with you! We weren’t allowed to film or take photos during the actual performance, but we can share a couple of snaps from before the show started — and our thoughts.

Disney Live Entertainment creative director of puppetry and articulation, Jeff Conover, has teamed up with master puppet designer Michael Curry to make new puppets for the show, including a massive, fiery Te Kā puppet that will shed its skin to become Te Fiti when Moana restores its heart.

For the stage show, Maui and Moana will perform the song “Warrior Face” which was removed from the 2016 film. It comes when the demigod teaches Moana how to face her fears before entering the Realm of the Monsters to face Tamatoa.

“Warrior Face” joins other hit songs from the movie’s soundtrack, including “You’re Welcome,” “We Know The Way” and “How Far I’ll Go.”
The really cool thing about this show is that many of the actors are Hawaiian or Pacific Islanders and love doing the show. It’s beautiful and while sets are minimal they make good use of projections. The lead Moana is very powerful — amazing voice. The first act which we saw is told from the perspective of the grandmother.

If you haven’t seen the movie, you might be a little lost. There wasn’t a lot of change in the set in the first act until the very end. It was mostly kind of like the actors telling the story while acting it out. Gramma Tala is also awesome — she’s kind of the narrator of the show, and she interacts with the audience a bit.
Oh, and there were PLENTY of recognizable songs in the first act!

We only got to see the first act of the show, but we can’t wait for passengers to experience a new take on the Tale of Moana!
