Some of the AllEars team are lucky to get to go to Disney World every single day for their jobs, and that means seeing a LOT of things happen in the parks.
And for those of us who work from home and experience the Disney magic from afar, we also see tons of trends online that happen IN Disney World. While some of them make us smile and we adore them, there are others that make us genuinely cringe and we kinda wish they’d go away forever. As it turns out, we talked to a Cast Member friend of ours, and it turns out that Cast Members HATE this current trend in Magic Kingdom.
Haunted Mansion in Magic Kingdom is known for being one of the most iconic attractions in the park. You’ve probably heard about the trend of people spreading their loved one’s ashes in the ride which is very much NOT ALLOWED and you’re risking permanent banishment from the resort by doing so (and trust us, those cameras on the ride mean the Cast Members see EVERYTHING).
However, there’s another less disturbing trend that was started on social media more recently, and it involves the painting of Madame Leota inside Memento Mori, the merchandise location for all things Haunted Mansion.
This is a beautiful painting that actually has a room on the other side of the wall that Cast Members are only allowed in, as it’s considered backstage. A trend has begun in the last few years of guests knocking on the painting in hopes that they’ll hear knocks back. Sounds cool, right? Well, Cast Members kinda hate it.
And they have good reason to, in our book! See, that painting is real that has special paint to allow certain details to be seen with a black light, so every time someone knocks on it, they’re running the risk of ruining the painting. There are some Cast Members who will knock back to guests, but it’s never guaranteed, especially because again, many of them are not big fans of it.
Some guests go overboard even, which is a whole other problem. Our own reporter shared that they’ve seen a child get so obsessed with the experience that they refused to stop knocking WITH their parent, even after getting multiple knocks back. This is a big issue, because again, the painting could be getting ruined with all the handprints and oils, and it becomes disturbing to other guests.
Before you touch anything in Disney World that isn’t for sale or isn’t clearly marked for interactive use, we always recommend you ask a Cast Member if it’s okay to interact with the object/part of the decor, and if they tell you not to, respect their answer! They’re not trying to ruin your fun or keep you from getting your fun video just because they want to be mean — they’re trying to maintain the look of their work space and ensure no one gets hurt and avoid anything getting broken.
