Picking an airline to fly to Disney World can be tough.
Orlando International Airport, MCO, was the 7th busiest airport in 2023 for passenger traffic. By the end of this year, MCO is expected to have a record 60 million passengers fly to and from the airport. The demand for flights to and from MCO is high, and choosing which airline to take you to your Disney World vacation can be hard when there are so many airlines from which to choose. Deemed one of the cheaper airline options, Allegiant has flights to and from MCO and Orlando Sanford Airport, and if you choose to fly with them for your next vacation to Orlando, we have learned three unspoken rules from flying with them ourselves.
Allegiant Airlines flies out of Terminal B at MCO and has already added three more routes to Orlando International Airport this year. Allegiant is considered a low-budget carrier, and this year, “Allegiant was named the best low-cost airline in North America by customers at the World Airline Awards.”
Be Prepared to Pack Light
If you are not an over-packer, Allegiant might be a good fit for you, especially if you are just taking a weekend trip to Orlando.
All passengers are allowed one personal item but be warned: The maximum dimensions of the personal item are 8 in. x 14 in. x 18 in., and it must fit under the seat in front of you.
You can purchase one carry-on bag per passenger, and the maximum size is 10 in. x 16 in. x 22 in.
If you are looking to bring more luggage with you, you can check up to four 50-pound bags measuring no more than 80 linear inches for an additional fee.
The ULTIMATE Packing List For Disney World In 2024
Save Money and Pay for Your Bags In Advance
Airlines like American Airlines have started to offer discounted bag fees when you reserve and pay for your checked bags online. Allegiant also offers more more significant discounts if you pay for your bags in advance.
Prices fluctuate based on the time you pay for your bag. When you book in advance, fees for your first and second checked bags can be up to $35. At the airport, a carry-on bag and your checked bags will cost $75 per bag. Prices will fluctuate depending on overage fees and when you choose to pay for your bag.
Paying for your bags in advance can save you some serious cash.
Book a Morning Flight
Allegiant has a limited schedule, which means that you may only be able to catch a route to Orlando a few times a week out of your home airport.
Due to the limited number of flights, we suggest booking an early morning flight. This gives you a better opportunity to catch another flight if your flight is delayed or canceled.
I Thought This Would Be the BEST Time of Day to Fly Out of Orlando Airport, But It’s Actually the WORST
Since the routes are so limited, it can be frustrating to wait for the next scheduled flight, as it could be days before that flight is flown again.
Our team has had both really good and some not-so-great experiences flying Allegiant. As long as you go in knowing that Allegiant is a budget airline, they should meet your expectations. For more travel tips, keep following along with AllEars.net

I live just 20 minutes from the Sanford Airport, and fly Allegiant usually a couple times a year to visit family. I like the fact that Allegiant is non-stop, but it is definitely not a budget airline. Nothing cheap about them, as they charge for everything from seats to carry on bags to snacks.
Our family flew from Fayetteville, AR to Orlando on Allegiant and it was just fine. With the money we saved we were able to rent a B&B with an ocean view.
I fly Allegiant once a year round trip from Sanford to Gulfport MS to visit daughter. The drive to the Airport is longer than the flight itself. Never had issues flying out of or into my airports with Allegiant.
We fly allegiant every February and March when we go to Daytona to our condo. We fly into Sanford and we’ve never had any problems in the past 7yrs. Love that we get bogo tickets with the credit card. Plus a free beverage. The staff have all been professional. Keep up the good work crew. Thank you
Allegiant is great and super affordable. They fly out of a smaller more convenient airport near me in Provo. For spring break I flew to Orlando with my daughter and her 5 kids. No problems
We moved to FLORIDA 10 years ago. Our family lives in ILLINOIS. We only fly Allegiant. We can fly with them a whole cheaper than drive. We usually take a personal bag and one carryon bag. If we are staying longer than a few days, we take a checking bag. I takes us two days to drive and 3 hours to fly.
I’ve flown Allegiant twice to the Sanford airport and several other times to Clearwater. We’ve never had an issue. All direct flights and they use smaller airports, it’s great!
The biggest “sin” Allegiant has in Florida is its ridiculous use of Sanford as an airport for Daytona Beach on their booking site.
Daytona Beach is over a hour away to the east and has its own airport. They need to knock it off asap.
Allegiant seating arrangements are good for about 2 hours of flight, 2.5 hours in a stretch.
The FA’s are on commission to sell snack kits to passengers. Beware the hard sell.
TSA at Sanford are brutal. They will confiscate items that are TSA approved, even items that have a TSA registration #. They couldnt care less.
If you use Allegiant from one of the irregularly served cities they poach fliers from, be warned, if Allegiant is late, you must wait.
They fly sequentially in some segments and are loath to dead head a plane just to keep on schedule.
