Chef Mickey’s vs. Topolino’s Terrace — Disney World Restaurant Guide

Which Disney character would you most like to meet on your Disney World vacation? Obviously, the answers to this vary greatly, but I think we can all make a pretty decent guess that MICKEY MOUSE tops the list for most visitors!

Hiya, Pal!

To that end, lots of people consider meeting the Main Mouse during a Character Meal — a twofer of an opportunity that combines meeting beloved Disney pals with a full meal. Today, we’re comparing two of these popular dining experiences that share one BIG THING in common: Mickey Mouse is one of the stars at both! We’re talking about Chef Mickey’s and Topolino’s Terrace!

A note before we dive in: for the purposes of this post, we’re focusing on the Breakfast experience, primarily. While it’s true that both restaurants serve Dinner, the dining experience at Topolino’s changes entirely from a Character Breakfast in the morning to a Signature Dining experience in the evening (and if you’re interested in learning about that lovely experience, you can click here!). Dinner at Chef Mickey’s, on the other hand, remains a Character Meal.

Here we go!

Chef Mickey’s

Chef Mickey’s Location and Atmosphere

You’ll find Chef Mickey’s on the Grand Canyon Concourse — aka the fourth floor — of Disney’s Contemporary Resort… which just so happens to be literal steps away from Magic Kingdom!

Chef Mickey’s

Though it’s located to one side of the concourse (the entrance is directly next to Contempo Café), it’s still pretty tough to miss the restaurant. You’ll either notice the cheerful décor featuring bright colors and character art first…

Chef Mickey’s

… OR you might HEAR the restaurant before you see it! Chef Mickey’s has a well-earned reputation for being one of the loudest restaurants in Disney World. This stems from the experience itself (with guests expressing excitement over the characters along with tunes encouraging diners to clap and sing along), and also from the cavernous setting on the Grand Canyon Concourse, which leads to a fair amount of echo.

Oh, and did we mention the Monorail goes through here? And while that is definitely a fun addition to the ambience, it also factors into the noise level.

Fun? Yes! Whimsical? Yes! High energy? That, too! Peaceful?

Chef Mickey’s in the Contemporary Resort

NOPE. But who can be blamed for getting a little excited when you consider the guests of honor at Chef Mickey’s…

Chef Mickey’s Characters

Chef Mickey’s is the ONLY Disney World restaurant where you can meet THE FAB FIVE!! And THIS is why it’s consistently tough to score an Advance Dining reservation here. Because these five are a REALLY BIG, HUGE, WONDERFUL DEAL!

We’ve got, of course, the Chef himself (whom you’ll meet for a photo opp prior to dining)…

Chef Mickey!!

And he’s joined by Minnie Mouse.

His best pal, Pluto, joins in the fun!

We don’t know how well Goofy does in the kitchen, but we’re sure glad he’s here.

And Donald Duck — in his best kitchen garb like all the rest — completes the FIVE.

Number One!

Not a bad way to start the day at all!

Chef Mickey’s Food and Service Style

Chef Mickey’s presents a full All-You-Care-to-Enjoy Buffet for Breakfast and Dinner.

For Breakfast, that means all you can select all you want from classics like Biscuits & Gravy, Mickey Waffles, eggs, bacon, sausage, and the like. But it also means carved meats like ham and beef brisket, charcuterie assortments, frittatas, and more!

Dinner is likewise an all-you-care-to-eat affair, with salads, breads, carved meats, plant-based options, mac & cheese, desserts, and MUCH more.

Guests often appreciate buffets for their variety. But the small downside to a buffet is that you have to leave your table from time to time to fill another plate. While picking and choosing your eats is the fun part, it may be a worry that you might miss a character when they come to your table.

Chef Mickey’s Character Dining Times and Prices

Chef Mickey’s offers its famous Character Meal for both Breakfast and Dinner. Breakfast is $51.00 for adults, and $33.00 for children (ages 3-9), plus tax and gratuity. Dinner is $62.00 for adults, and $39.00 for children (ages 3-9), plus tax and gratuity

What Do AllEars Readers Have to Say?

You can access all sorts of reviews of Breakfast at Chef Mickey’s here, and Dinner at Chef Mickey’s here. But we’ll put the spotlight on a few quotes from AllEars readers to give you an idea…

“The experience is what is what you are paying for, not the food primarily. Overall you only need to do it one time.”

“I think you have to do it at least once…  it’s iconic character dining; great options for kids and it’s in the Contemporary with the monorail going above you.”

“My kids thought it was the best food of the trip. They just wanted some all-you-can-eat Mickey waffles and sides. We stuffed ourselves, laughed a lot, saw characters, and it’s the only restaurant my kids say that we have to go back to next time. Know what you are getting (which is food that will make your kids happy) and it’s a good time.”

Topolino’s Terrace

Topolino’s Terrace Location and Atmosphere

Topolino’s Terrace is located in Disney’s Riviera Resort, which is inspired by Europe and the Mediterranean (and by Walt and Lillian Disney’s travels!).

Disney’s Riviera Resort

The full name, in fact, of the restaurant is Topolino’s Terrace — Flavors of the Riviera. And “Topolino” is the Italian name for Mickey Mouse! The “Terrace” part refers to the rooftop location of this stunning restaurant.

Topolino’s Terrace

Something well worth noting, though, is that –as lovely as Topolino’s Terrace is — it may not exactly be easy to get there for an early morning meal if you aren’t staying nearby. Riviera Resort is one of the stops on the Disney Skyliner, which likewise stops at EPCOT and Disney’s Hollywood Studios. But depending on your initial location, you may need to consider transfer stops along the way. Just something to consider.

That said, the setting itself is elegant and sophisticated… and simply lovely.

But the Disney pals who are present while you dine for Breakfast provide plenty of classic Disney FUN…

Topolino’s Terrace Characters

During what’s officially known as Breakfast à la Art with Mickey & Friends, you’ll meet Topolino himself!

Mickey the Painter

Here, Mickey is donning his painter garb. In fact, each of the characters wear special costumes that are completely unique to Topolino’s and reflect their art!

And Donald Duck just so happens to be the cutest sculptor you ever did see.

Donald the Sculptor

SERIOUSLY. SO. CUTE.

Topolino’s Terrace Food and Service Style

The Character Breakfast at Topolino’s Terrace offers a prix-fixe meal which starts with an assortment of fresh pastries and bread for the table.

Bread Assortment

Adults then get to choose an entrée from choices including Quiche Gruyère with house-made pancetta, Sour Cream Waffle, Smoked Salmon, Two Eggs Any Style, and more.

Wood-fired Butchers Steak

Children ages 3-9 can choose Mickey Waffle Dippers, Fruit and Yogurt, or Scrambled Eggs for their entrée and a choice of two sides from bacon, sausage, roasted potatoes, and a fruit cup.

Since the food is brought directly to your table, there is no need to worry about missing a character visit.

Right away, you’ll notice the difference in the options from what we discussed with Breakfast at Chef Mickey’s. Now, Topolino’s Terrace is NOT an all-you-care-to-eat experience. And the variety of options is not large in the way  buffet choices are. But in addition to being beautifully presented, dishes here are also well-executed and, of course, prepared to order.

After all, Topolino’s offers Signature Dining in the evenings.

Topolino’s Terrace Character Dining Times and Prices

Disney Characters are present for Breakfast ONLY at Topolino’s Terrace, which costs $45.00 per Adult, and $29.00 for Children (ages 3-9). (Dinner is a  la carte.)

What do AllEars readers have to say?

Again, let’s highlight a few reader comments!

“One of the best breakfasts I’ve had on property. The food was excellent, I had the quiche and it was perfect. The characters were great.”

“Went for breakfast and the food was wonderful! The view was spectacular and the characters were absolutely adorable.”

“In my opinion, this is currently the best character breakfast on property. The food was amazing ( I could eat those cinnamon danish all day )! I had the Two Eggs Any Style and they were fresh and nicely seasoned. There are beautiful views for this restaurant too.”

The Verdict

As you can see, it’s not apples-to-apples when it comes Chef Mickey’s and Topolino’s Terrace, so let’s reiterate a few points and factors to consider that will hopefully help you choose which Character Breakfast is best for YOU.

Donald Duck at Topolino’s Terrace

When it comes to Disney Characters, you’ll obviously find Mickey at both (HOORAY!!). And the truly unique costumes at Topolino’s Terrace are entirely NEXT LEVEL. But many people find the draw of the entire Fab Five together at one meal hard to resist. (That doesn’t mean we don’t love you, Dancing Daisy!!) If you can’t miss Goofy or Pluto, it’s Chef Mickey’s for you.

The Gang’s All Here!

If you’re looking for ease of getting to or from a park, Chef Mickey’s is about as close as you can get to Magic Kingdom outside of the actual park! Topolino’s Terrace offers ease of getting TO Hollywood Studios or EPCOT thanks to the Disney Skyliner. However, getting to Topolino’s to begin with may require a little more strategizing, depending on where you are staying.

Looking for a high-energy location for your high-energy toddler? Look no further than Chef Mickey’s! Hoping for a more peaceful — or perhaps more grown-up — experience? (Because YES, you bet adults are welcome at Character Meals — everyone can do with a hug from Mickey!) Try Topolino’s.

If you love the idea of fueling up for your park day at an All-You-Care-to-Enjoy meal with lots of choices for all the members of your group, Chef Mickey’s has you covered. If food quality is your main consideration… well, as you can see from reviews from readers, the food at Topolino’s makes far more of an impression, earning kudos like “wonderful” and “excellent!”

No matter which you choose, could you do us a huge favor when you’re there? Tell Mickey we said “HIYA, PAL!”
