This year, Disney’s Animal Kingdom has welcomed a new baby zebra, Dash, and a new baby monkey, Douglas, to the park!

And now Animal Kingdom has welcomed their newest addition: a Masai giraffe calf!
The not-so-little baby boy is already six feet tall and 183 pounds! He was born on June 10th, and is having a great time so far hanging out with mom and getting to know his new home!

According to the cute boy’s keepers, “He’s a special guy with a unique butterfly marking over his right shoulder and heart-shaped markings dotting his coat.”

These ragged-edged spot patterns are typical of Masai giraffes, which is the kind of giraffe you’ve seen if you’ve been on Animal Kingdom’s Kilimanjaro Safaris!

Animal Kingdom works with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan Program to responsibly breed threatened and endangered species, and the successful birth of a new giraffe as part of that program is a big thing to celebrate! There are only about 35,000 Masai giraffe in the wild, so it’s a beautiful thing to see an added member to their population!
A big congratulations to the calf’s mom, Lily! We’re excited to see this cutie on Kilimanjaro Safaris soon! Keep following AllEars for more good news from Disney’s Animal Kingdom!
