‘Thursday Night Football’ Gets Amazon a Record Number of New Prime Subscribers

There’s Disney+HuluAmazon Prime Video, HBO Max, and MANY more, with each streamer offering different content, costs, and perks. Amazon Prime has just entered the world of sports broadcasting and they’re now reporting record numbers of new subscribers!

Live television has been moving to streaming services and Amazon Prime has joined the party. For the first time, Thursday Night Football was exclusive to Amazon Prime subscribers. The new streaming method lead to a HUGE number of new Prime subscribers over just three hours, according to CNBC.

The record number of new subscribers was more than Amazon has seen during Prime Day, Black Friday, or Cyber Monday, and Jay Marine, global head of Amazon’s sports division, wrote, “By every measure, Thursday Night Football on Prime Video was a resounding success.”

Amazon is hoping sports broadcasting will increase Prime memberships, which cost $139 annually for free shipping on Amazon, unlimited streaming of Amazon Prime movies and television shows, and more. Amazon Prime has approximately 200 million subscribers globally, with 80 million active Prime Video viewers.

Amazon will broadcast 15 football games this season, spending approximately $1 billion annually to be the exclusive streamer of Thursday Night Football through 2023.

Amazon Prime also recently experienced huge success with their new series, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, which achieved 25 million viewers within the first 24 hours. The premiere of the show was declared “the biggest premiere in the history of Prime Video.”
