Do you end up shopping a lot at Disney World and then end up with a ton of bags you have to lug around the parks?

It’s okay — it happens. We don’t know about you, but we also miss that perk we once had that let us send items directly from the store to our Disney World hotel. However, a new patent filed by Disney could have a robot doing all the package carrying for you!
Disney has filed a patent called “Robotic Sherpa,” which is a system of mobile lockers that could allow guests to store items in them that would then move around the resort and be accessed later at a different location by the same guest. The system uses a robot with multiple cameras for navigation — which would certainly come in handy in theme park crowds.

The patent mentions how each mobile locker would have a detachable storage compartment that can easily be moved from one locker to another. The patent reads: “The storage compartment can be coupled either the same or a different mobility unit. The mobile lockers can be recalled by a customer to either the customer’s location or to designated locations at the venue. The lockers can include any one of multiple locking mechanisms.”

The patent even included an accompanying mobile phone app (or perhaps a feature in the My Disney Experience app) that allows guests to call for a locker, lock and unlock it, show a map of where it is, as well as get a status update on its location.

However, according to Orlando Business Journal, Disney Imagineering has said there’s no plan to actually use the technology in the parks just yet. Diego Parras, spokesman with Walt Disney Imagineering, said, “As Imagineers, we’re always pushing technology and innovation and testing new applications for possible future opportunities. At this point, we simply are exploring potential uses for this technology and have no plans for specific implementation.”

All we can say is that this would be a very useful feature for guests visiting a resort as large as Walt Disney World. It sure would be nice to have a Robotic Sherpa to lug all our purchases around.
If you’re interested in learning more about the kind of technology Disney is working on for the theme parks, be sure to read more about it here — and, yes, we are still waiting for Robot Baby Groot.

In the meantime, you can see some of Disney’s best technology on display in theme parks right now — from the web-slinging Spider-Man robot at Disneyland’s Avengers Campus to robot golf carts in Disney World, Disney Imagineers continue to make the guest experience more high-tech and fun.
