Did Disney Just CANCEL All 6 of These Projects?

Perhaps Disney got a little ahead of itself with these projects…

Setting up its roots in the film industry, Disney is constantly pumping out movies that have us coming back to the theaters over and over again. However, not every project the company announces sees the silver screen. In fact, many don’t even make it far enough to actually get filmed.

Big stars, revisiting beloved Disney IP, and even Imagineering-created worlds won’t save every project. In fact, we’re taking a look at six films that are seemingly paused or canceled despite being hyped up by Disney in the past.

Tower of Terror Movie

Making a big splash when it was first announced in 2021, the Tower of Terror movie was set to star Marvel icon Scarlett Johansson — who was apparently also producing the film.

While the film has not officially been canceled, it is taking longer than expected. In 2025, Johansson said the script is “a hard nut to crack. Harder than you think, because the ride itself, there’s some lore to it, but it’s… I don’t want to say thin, but it is, kind of!”

She added, “That’s part of the mystery of the ride. It’s been a fun project to work on because it’s a blue-sky project. It has also proved to be a hard nut to crack. But we’ll crack the case of it. It’s taking shape!” There’s hope yet!

Blade Reboot

Infamously announced at San Diego Comic Con in 2019, Blade, starring Mahershala Ali as the titular Marvel vampire “Daywalker”, has been in development limbo for nearly seven years.

The movie has had a famously troubled journey, as it’s cycled through multiple writers, multiple directors, and repeated delays. The film has already been removed from Disney’s release calendar, and rumors surrounding the movie’s cancellation became extra loud last year.

While the solo project seems to be dead in the water, it’s still possible that Ali’s version of Blade (which was previously occupied by Wesley Snipes in four Marvel movies — three of his own trilogy and an appearance in Deadpool & Wolverine) shows up in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in a team-up movie or a movie centered on another character(s).

Live-action Aristocats

Disney’s live-action slate once included a remake of The Aristocats — which was set to be directed by famous musician and entertainer Questlove.

However, in 2025, Questlove confirmed that the project is dead, citing leadership changes and shifting studio priorities. The original 1970 animated film centered around a family of Parisian cats making the journey back home to their adoring owner after being catnapped and shipped off by an evil butler.

Live-action The Sword in the Stone

Despite development starting over a decade ago, it’s not looking good for the live-action remake of The Sword in the Stone.

The 1963 animated retelling of the chronicles of King Arthur was tagged to be remade into a live action filmed helmed by 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. It was intended to be a Disney+ release at one point,  but in 2024, Fresnadillo confirmed that the project had been quietly scrapped.

Space Mountain Movie

Disney has been developing a live-action Space Mountain movie for years. Originally, Joby Harold of Safehouse Pictures was writing the film, but that is no longer the case. Jonathan Eirich and Ryan Halprin from Rideback (the banner behind Netflix’s live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series) and Tory Tunnell of Safehouse Pictures were also attached to the project.

As of 2024, writers Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec were attached to write a script, but there’s still no significant movement on production.

Club 33 Movie

In 2024, it was revealed that Goosebumps writer Darren Lemke was attached to a Club 33 movie based on the very exclusive and expensive lounge and membership in Disneyland. However, it was also revealed that Disney asked Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit of Pokémon: Detective Pikachu to rewrite the script.

The film is still technically in active production, but boy, is progress slow…

Not every film listed above has been technically canceled, and not every canceled project is technically dead. Disney can theoretically do whatever it wants with its movie slate (reviving dormant projects or fast-tracking others), and you can bet on us covering these updates as they happen!
