“It was all started by a mouse…”

These iconic words from Walt Disney have come to define the company that bears his name and its relationship with its franchise character for decades. Mickey Mouse is indistinguishable from Disney, with the three-circle silhouette being an international symbol for the company that crosses language and cultural barriers. And of course, Mickey has been part of the company’s theme parks from the beginning… sometimes in bizarre ways.
From the opening of Disneyland in 1955, Mickey Mouse has had major presence in Disney’s Parks. There are meet & greets with the character, countless souvenirs, live shows, the Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway attraction, and a parade featuring disembodied versions of his hands and feet marching down Main Street U.S.A.
Wait, what?

It’s true. That bizarre scene was a major part of the Mickey Mania parade, which started at Walt Disney World in 1994. Loosely inspired by a 1994 video game of the same name, Mickey Mania was meant to be a celebration of all things Mickey Mouse. However, instead of featuring, say, floats representing different Mickey cartoons (sort of like an Eras Tour for the Big Cheese) as one might expect, Disney went a different – – and very 90s – – direction.
Some of these oh-so-90s elements included BMX bikers and skateboarders…

… staple 90s characters including Max from Goof Troop, Roger Rabbit (whose lines were eventually cut from the parade due to the legal-wrangling between Disney and Steven Spielberg’s Amblin over the character), and Winnie the Pooh…

… as alluded to above, some stylized interpretations of Mickey iconography including his red and yellow color scheme, anthropomorphic versions of his shoes and glove and a gigantic pair of Mickey Ears…

… and imagery evoking clocks and gears.

Oh, and in perhaps the most 90’s touch of all, the parade featured a theme song that took a stab at rap with lyrical gems including “Yo there! Listen up all you rad dudes! Walt’s house is rockin’ with the mania that’s hit the street with the brand new beat!” and “Mickey here, Mickey there everywhere. A Mister Fine mouse about town. Main Mouse Mickey, feelin’ kind of tricky ’bout the ways he’s always getting around.”

Despite all these, certainly by modern standards, bizarre elements of the parade’s presentation, the finale float did feature versions of Mickey throughout the years, finally delivering on what one would have expected the entire parade to be.

Mickey Mania ran at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom from 1994 through the fall of 1996, and suffice to say, was quite memorable. In fact, I must admit even as I’ve snarked on some of the more… out there elements of the presentation, the version of 6-year-old me that still lives in my brain still feels some pangs of nostalgia for the bright colors. Also, not-for-nothing, but it certainly feels like Disney wouldn’t dare try anything quite as bizarre today, instead likely taking a “safer” approach.

Mickey Mania, which also ran for a time at Tokyo Disneyland, ended in the fall of 1996. It was replaced by the Remember the Magic Parade, which celebrated Walt Disney World’s 25th anniversary and had nothing weird or dated about it at all…

The 1994 Mickey Mania parade was one of the more bizarre productions in Walt Disney World history, for better or worse. Stay tuned to AllEars for more deep dives on Disney history!

Mickey Mania was the parade on our first visit to WDW in 1995. Whilst it was fun, I was really disappointed at the time because I’d been to Disneyland Paris 3 years earlier and was raving to my husband about this great parade that had a float for every film. Now after 30 trips to WDW I have learnt to embrace change.
