We’ve been not-so-patiently waiting on the opening of the TRON Lightcycle Run coaster for a LONG time!
We’ve been watching the construction in Magic Kingdom for years, and even got a NEW look at the coaster from the recently reopened Walt Disney World Railroad. And while we found out at the D23 Expo in September 2022 that the ride would finally be opening in spring 2023, we never had an official opening date…until now!
After sending out QUITE the tease on social yesterday, Disney has revealed the official opening date for TRON in Magic Kingdom. The roller coaster will open on April 4th, 2023!
The coaster is a copy of its counterpart in Shanghai Disneyland, but this is the first time the ride will appear in the U.S. It has been a highly anticipated addition, so it’s likely to be a very popular attraction for a while after its grand opening.
The story of the TRON coaster will pick up after TRON: Legacy, when Kevin’s son, Sam Flynn, opens up a “second gateway into a digital realm called the Grid.” The first of these two portals can be found at Shanghai Disneyland, and when you enter the queue for the one at Magic Kingdom you’ll “feel as if you’re digitized and transported to the Grid for a special Lightcycle race.”
When you’re on the ride, you’re on Team Blue going up against the Grid’s Programs, Team Orange. Your goal is to be the first to race through the eight Energy Gates. When it opens, the ride will be one of the fastest coasters at any of the international Disney parks.
Prior to its official opening on April 4th, 2023, Cast Members will be the first to experience the attraction with special previews planned! Additionally, Disney has shared that there WILL be special previews for Passholders and DVC members! We’ll be sure to share details and dates once available.
That’s all we know about the grand opening for now, but we’ll make sure to keep you updated if any more tidbits are announced before the big day! We can’t wait to finally ride it for ourselves.
