Disney’s newest princess has journeyed from Kumandra to the big screen as Raya and the Last Dragon has made its debut!
While we LOVED it, Disney fans everywhere have been hyping up the movie too as it continues to climb box office charts!
Variety has reported that Raya and the Last Dragon has led the domestic box office in its third weekend. Disney’s new animated film collected $5.2 million from 2,261 theaters through Sunday. Los Angeles theaters began operating once again on March 12th, bringing more revenue in for the new movie and accounting for nearly 9% of all sales this weekend.
Raya and the Last Dragon earned another $8 million overseas from 29 countries and $71 million globally through the $30 Premier Access option on Disney+. Yet, the film did have a slight 5% decline in ticket sales from the previous weekend.
It’s pretty important to note that, even though Raya and the Last Dragon has secured a decent sum of money for theaters’ current situation, it’s a HUGE dip in revenue from previous films. Right before the closures, Onward received a slightly bigger haul of $141.9 million at the beginning of 2020.
And, right before that, 2019 was the YEAR of Disney films with hits like Avengers: Endgame earning almost $2.8 billion and Frozen 2 earning $1.5 billion. Clearly, Raya and the Last Dragon falls under a different set of circumstances. Considering the challenges it has faced compared to those previous films, it’s holding its own!

The film continues to hold on as one of Disney’s first theatrical releases in the COVID era, which has brought more fans to live-person entertainment as well as at-home streaming. Disney hasn’t decided whether upcoming films like Black Widow will be in theaters yet or not as they gauge how the box office will react.
As Disney continues to release its upcoming shows and movies, we’ll be sure to update you on everything you need to know! Stay tuned with All Ears for more Disney entertainment!

The real reason it is topping the box office right now is because there is nothing else to go see at the movie theaters right now. At least nothing good. So it really doesn’t have any good competition right now
