News! The Pac-12 and Big Ten Conferences Will Not Participate in College Football This Fall

One of the biggest sporting events that would typically begin around this time of year is football. But with the global pandemic still a present part of our day-to-day lives, certain institutions are making difficult decisions on how to proceed in 2020.

Two major conferences in NCAA College Football have made the decision to pull out entirely from this fall’s season, with some looking to consider moving the season to spring.

ESPN has reported that both the Pac-12 and the Big Ten Conferences have decided to suspend their fall season. With colleges across the country still weighing their options for a safe fall semester, the conferences made the decision out of an abundance of caution for their student athletes, coaches, staff, and fans.

The day began with the Big Ten announcing that they would postpone all fall sports seasons, including football. The decision was followed up by the Pac-12, who stated that they would consider a return to sports after January 1, 2021 if conditions related to the pandemic improved.

As of press time, the remaining conferences in the Power 5, the Big 12, ACC, and SEC,  have yet to follow suit with cancelling their seasons. The ACC and SEC had originally signaled their intent to play football this fall, but ESPN noted that decision could change with the announcements from the Big Ten and Pac-12.

With college football in jeopardy for the fall, sports networks like ESPN may be facing yet another period of time where there will be hardly any live sports to broadcast. Currently, the NBA is playing out the rest of their season at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex, while the MLB is also in the midst of their regular, albeit shorter, season. The NFL is scheduled to begin on September 10, 2020.
