There’s a lot to love about Disney cruises — the magic, the service, the food, the vibes — but there are also a few things I really wish someone had told me before my first sailing.

I’m talking about those little hacks and heads-ups that would’ve saved me stress, money, and missed opportunities. So here’s what I learned the hard way (so you don’t have to).
Know Your Booking Windows Like Your Vacation Depends on It (Because It Kinda Does)
There’s a whole timeline you need to know once you’ve booked your cruise. Online check-in, submitting your travel docs, booking excursions, and adding special experiences — they all open up at different times depending on your Castaway Club level.

The earlier you can book those extras, the better your shot at scoring the popular stuff (like adult dining at Palo or certain port adventures). Mark those dates on your calendar, set a reminder, and treat it like a Taylor Swift ticket drop.
Don’t Sleep on Room Service—Especially at Breakfast
Room service is included (yes, really), and it can be a total lifesaver. Especially in the mornings when the idea of rushing to the buffet with wet hair and cranky kids (or just your own grumpy, undercaffeinated self) sounds like a nightmare.

Order a pot of coffee, fruit, and a bagel to the room while you get ready, and boom—instant chill morning. Also: cookies and milk before bed? Zero regrets.
“Guaranteed” Staterooms Come with a Gamble
Booking a “guaranteed” stateroom might save you money, but don’t assume it means you’re picking your room. You’re not. You’re guaranteed a room somewhere in that category or higher, but you won’t know where until Disney assigns it.

If you care about things like view, noise level, or proximity to the elevator, it might be worth paying a bit more to pick your actual stateroom. Trust me, knowing what you’re getting makes for a less stressful countdown to sail day.
You Can Order That Ice Cream Sundae at Dinner — But Ask in Advance
So here’s a fun little hack that isn’t on the menu: during your rotational dining, you can order an ice cream sundae to the table — but you’ve gotta ask ahead of time.

If that’s the dessert of your dreams, let your server know earlier in the meal or even the night before. Otherwise, you might miss out, and that’s a very specific kind of heartbreak we wouldn’t wish on anyone.
Not Every Lunch Has to Be Buffet or Poolside
Most people hit the buffet or grab a quick bite by the pool for lunch (and that’s fine!), but there’s usually at least one sit-down restaurant open for lunch on embarkation day and sometimes during the cruise too.

If you’re looking to avoid the chaos or want something a little more relaxed and less “fend for yourself,” ask a Cast Member which dining room is open and enjoy a quieter meal with table service.
The Sommelier Bin: The Hidden Wine Deal No One Talks About
Here’s a Disney Cruise secret for the grown-ups: the Sommelier Bin. It’s not always advertised, but you’ll find it on the menu at lounges like The Rose on the Disney Treasure and Disney Wish, or at Keys on the Magic.

For around $13, you get a surprise glass of wine — basically, whatever high-quality wine they’ve opened recently and need to finish off. It’s a total wildcard, but in the best way. Some bartenders might even ask for your preferences before they pick. We’ve had some really good glasses this way—and it beats paying full price for something you’re not sure you’ll love.

These are the tips we wish someone had spelled out before we stepped onboard.
