Well, winter will be over soon and we’ll be headed into spring. That means it’s time to start preparing for hurricane season, which runs from June 1st through November 30th. As hurricanes can affect operations at Disney World, we do our best to keep a close eye on them.

One of the first indications that we’re getting close to hurricane season is that the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) releases the hurricane names for the year — now we’ve got a look at the tropical cyclone names for 2025. Heads up! There are some Disney character names included!
According to WFTS, this year’s hurricane names are:
- Andrea
- Barry
- Chantal
- Dexter
- Erin
- Fernand
- Gabrielle
- Humberto
- Imelda
- Jerry
- Karen
- Lorenzo
- Melissa
- Nestor
- Olga
- Pablo
- Rebekah
- Sebastien
- Tanya
- Van
- Wendy

Note the Disney character names, like Imelda (Coco), Sebastien (The Little Mermaid), and Wendy (Peter Pan). However, we doubt the NOAA chose those names because of their Disney references.

In the early 1950s, these storms didn’t have names, other than the year they happened and the order they happened in — so they were basically numbers. But that got confusing when trying to communicate to the public, so a system was put in place in 1953 to give each hurricane a distinctive name. At first, only female names were used, but by 1979, both male and female names were given to storms.

Names are not chosen at random, though. For Atlantic Ocean hurricanes, there is a list of names that are used every six years. However, if a storm is deadly and has a big impact, like Katrina, its name is retired. There’s even a backup list of names so that storms never run out of names during a busy hurricane season.

If you’re visiting Disney World during hurricane season, you’ll want to stay weather aware — and be aware of Disney’s hurricane cancellation policies. Disney also has specific steps it takes to prepare for hurricanes, even if a storm results in the parks closing.
We’ll keep track of storms that could affect the area, too, so check back with AllEars again soon for more.
