While Hocus Pocus 3 has been stalled by the months-long striking, we’re getting a few notes about what possible storylines could be found in the third installment of the ‘Hocus Pocus’ films.

Since the success of the hype surrounding the second installment of the beloved Hocus Pocus films, fans have been eagerly anticipating any news of a continuing film to throw this franchise into the trilogy universe. Screenwriter, Jen D’Angelo, recently sat down with EW to discuss the storyline for a ‘Hocus Pocus 3’ film and the details are a bit flexible.

There’s a burning question on everyone’s mind — have we seen the end of the Sanderson Sisters? In Hocus Pocus 2 the sinister sister witches seemed to have met their demise crossing over to an abyss beyond our realm however, the answer D’Angelo delivered surprised us. When asked about the possibility of seeing Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy in the third film, she said their fulfilled storyline is still in “full idealism” over a potential return.

D’Angelo went on to explain that while a concrete storyline is still in the works they’ve discussed several directions the third film could go. A few of the feasible options include exploring Hannah Waddingham’s Mother Witch character from the 2022 sequel. Mother Witch’s backstory and how closely she followed the original trio of witches since handing Winifred’s beloved “booooook” over to her and starting their centuries of wicked ways. One of the most notable nods that we’ve seen since the first film is how fondly the sisters speak of their “mother” and remember her, and when D’Angelo was asked if this is who the Sanderson Sisters kept referencing she confirmed.

“I believe that she’s that mother, that she is the scorpion pie mother, and that they had a much more significant relationship with her than we’ve yet to see,” D’Angelo said. “But, maybe we will see.”

D’Angelo is also looking to keep in mind what the fans of the franchise want to see most. “I want to do right by the fans and I definitely want to keep in mind what they want to see, but, at the same time, I feel like movies can go slightly awry when they’re only catering to the fans and trying to check off a list, like, ‘We got this and this, so the fans should be happy,'” D’Angelo stated. “In reality, you want to make sure that the movie is solid on its own, and the fan service moments are baked into the story and that they’re satisfying and not just tacked on.”
