What Every Disney Adult Should Know Before Going Through TSA Security

If you’re trying to avoid a hassle with TSA on your return home from a Disney vacation, there might be a few souvenirs you’ll want to flag as potential problems.

If you’ve ever packed your bags after a Disney trip and thought, “Surely TSA has seen weirder than this — I should be good to go,” I’m here to tell you not to get too comfortable. While TSA agents see a lot, sometimes Disney-specific items that you think are totally normal to take through the airport can still set off TSA alarms.

It’s important to note that while these items could get TSA to perk their ears up, these are all still LEGAL to travel with. You just might get stopped and delayed for a few minutes while TSA searches your stuff.

First up is the famous Galaxy’s Edge soda bottles. We’re talkin’ about those Coke and Sprite bottles that look outta this world. Well, unfortunately, TSA tends to agree.

While they look cool, these bottles are shaped after Star Wars thermal detonators — AKA a weapon.

You can bring them through TSA in your carry-on — but make sure they are completely empty. If there’s even a drop of soda left, it’s a no-go. If you want to bring them home full, they need to be in your checked bag. Either way, don’t be surprised if TSA inspects them to make sure they’re just fancy bottles.

Next up are Disney balloons. They’re adorable, iconic, and Disney Parks staples… but they are also not flying through TSA fully inflated.

You’ll need to deflate the balloon or say goodbye to it at security. It doesn’t matter how much you paid or that may be transparent — there is no exception. You can get them deflated at the Disney Store at the airport!

One AllEars reader told us about a TSA incident surrounding baby wipes. The reader bought the wipes in Disney Springs because it was hot, sticky, and they needed to wipe their hands when they weren’t near a bathroom. Totally reasonable, right?

However, TSA confiscated them because the reader wasn’t traveling with a baby. TSA told them that the wipes were setting off alarms as possible explosives, so that’s another item to be mindful of.

Speaking of suspicious items, souvenirs with sand can be considered suspicious. Multiple readers have told us about sand setting off alarms, such as the Star Wars kinetic sand toy (which was checked for being C-4) and a Ziploc bag of sand from Castaway Cay via a Disney cruise. Both were flagged, tested, and ultimately returned, but not without some extra screening.

We also heard a story about a Japanese garden-style sand souvenir from EPCOT being flagged for its white powder. TSA cut open the bag to test it, then sealed it back up with tape. Everyone got through eventually, but not without some stress.

Finally, let’s talk about the big one: lightsabers. The good news? TSA does allow lightsabers through security, and they’re generally considered an OK carry-on item. We’ve seen plenty of Disney fans walk through airports holding them like proud Jedi (or Sith… no judgment).

That said, individual TSA agents can still screen them. It’s always a good idea to be polite and follow TSA instructions to be on your way as fast as possible.

When in doubt, keep it simple. Pour out liquids, deflate those balloons, or store your souvenirs in a checked bag to avoid big problems. The only thing worse than leaving Disney is leaving Disney and watching your souvenir get taken away at airport security.
