REVIEW: Delicious Mexican Food Is Hiding at This Disney World Hotel Restaurant

Good news, there is no shortage of dining options at Disney World. Bad news, though, you somehow have to decide where you actually want to eat. If you go on the My Disney Experience app and filter by “Dining,” you will likely feel pretty overwhelmed at all the possibilities. However, we are here to help!

Maya Grill at Disney’s Coronado Springs

Here at AllEars, we know all the ins and outs of Disney restaurants — including where you should definitely eat, and where you should skip. We recently stopped by Maya Grill at Disney’s Coronado Springs Resort and are bringing you our FULL review! Should you venture out of the theme parks to dine at this hotel restaurant? Let’s find out!

Background

You will find Maya Grill nestled inside Disney’s Coronado Springs. The restaurant features a grand Mexican dining room with ancient-modern styling. The dining room features the Mayan motifs of fire, sun, and water.  On the menu, you will enjoy the flavors of Mexico and discover Nuevo Latino cuisine.

Here’s what you need to know about dining at this restaurant.

Atmosphere

The dining area of Maya Grill is gorgeous, and we love the inclusion of Mayan motifs throughout. While the restaurant is relatively casual, we also think this could be a romantic date spot. While we were there, a live guitarist was playing “Beauty and the Beast.” The live music combined with a seat by the window at sunset sounds like a wonderful evening to us!

Dining Area

The dining area is expansive, and this restaurant is fairly “under the radar,” so you should be able to dine without a reservation. However, we always recommend reservations if at all possible! You never know when a restaurant might be really crowded.

Maya Grill

Keep in mind that Maya Grill is only open for dinner, so plan accordingly! But enough about that, what are we eating?!

Food & Drinks

We started with the Chips Duo for $12, which is freshly made crispy tortilla chips paired with house-made chipotle salsa and queso blanco. If you are looking for an excellent queso blanco, you need to grab this!

Chips Duo

The chips are thicker and have a great crunch. They were golden and held up really well to the sauces. The chipotle salsa was very thin and runny. It is not a chunky salsa. It has a bit of heat at first that lingers in your mouth for a while before disappearing quickly. Overall, we would say it has a mild heat.

Chipotle Salsa

The queso is creamy, a little bit runny, and easy to dip your chip into. It is made with mozzarella and Oaxaca cheese, which we thought was a fantastic combination. The mozzarella is creamy, and the Oaxaca brings a sharper cheese flavor and a bit of nuttiness. We found ourselves coming back to this queso over and over again.

Queso Blanco

For our meal, we tried the Baja Fish Tacos for $28. These tacos feature beer-battered fish, napa cabbage, charred pineapple salsa, and chipotle aioli, all served in flour tortillas. The fish was heavily fried and almost leaned into the fish & chips category. It was a bit more fried than we’d hoped, and we could taste the oil in the taco. With the other flavors in the taco, we think it needed to be a bit lighter on the batter and frying.

Baja Fish Tacos

The cabbage and pineapple salsa added a great balance of flavors and textures. They helped lighten up the dish a bit and added some great crunch. The chipotle aioli was tasty, but there was too much on the tacos, as it overpowered the other flavors and ended up being really messy. It added a bit of kick to the dish, though it wasn’t overly spicy.

Baja Fish Tacos

We also grabbed the Ossobuco Al Pastor for $43. This is tender braised pork ossobuco in al pastor style, served over creamy hominy grits, finished with pineapple salsa, pastor sauce, and fresh cilantro. With a price tag of almost $50, we were hoping for a lot out of this dish! We are happy to report that it was delicious.

Ossobuco Al Pastor

You get a massive chunk of meat, and this was one of the most tender pieces of pork we have probably ever had. It was falling off the bone and so juicy. The sauce had a rich, sweet tomato flavor with a bit of earthiness. The pineapple salsa and cilantro added some brightness to the dish and really helped bring all the flavors together.

Ossobuco Al Pastor

The grits were smooth, creamy, and a little bit cheesy. Some of the sauce dripped into the grits, and it honestly made them even more delicious. This dish has a higher price tag, but we were very impressed!

Finally, for dessert, we got the Cajeta Stuffed Fried Churros for $16. It is churros filled with cajeta, vanilla ice cream, seasonal berries, galleta María crumble, and chocolate sauce. Based on the description, we were thinking the churros might be stuffed with all the ingredients, but they are just stuffed with cajeta. The remaining ingredients are served on top.

Cajeta Stuffed Fried Churros

The chocolate sauce is rich and creamy, with a deep chocolate flavor. Our churros were slightly overfried, but we think we would rather have an extra crispy churro than an undercooked one! The cajeta inside — a type of dulce de leche made with goat’s milk — is super creamy and rich. It has a delicious milky flavor!

Cajeta Stuffed Fried Churros

The berries added some wonderful freshness, and we loved the creaminess of the vanilla ice cream. The cookie crumbles added a bit of crunch and were a fun touch. The presentation is beautiful, and we enjoyed it. While it may not be the most interesting dessert we have had, if you are looking for churros, this would be a great option.

Magic or Tragic?

This Disney World restaurant is a must-visit if…

  • You are staying at Coronado Springs or are in the area. Coronado Springs has a fair number of dining options, and we think Maya Grill is a great choice, especially if you are staying at the hotel! Convenient AND delicious.
  • You are looking for tasty Mexican food. We think this is an excellent option for Mexican food at Disney World, and it is usually easy to get in without a reservation.
  • You want a delicious meal outside of the parks, without needing a reservation. This restaurant is pretty under the radar, so you don’t usually need a reservation to dine here. Plus, we love that it is a bit more relaxing, away from the hustle and bustle of the theme parks.

You should skip this Disney World spot if…

  • You have a tight budget. While you can find more affordable options on the menu, overall, this restaurant is a bit pricier. Make sure you check out the menu if you are on a tight budget! Cheaper options at Coronado Springs include El Mercado de Coronado.
  • Mexican food isn’t what you are craving. Mexican food is the star at Maya Grill, so if you aren’t craving it, we definitely recommend going elsewhere. The good news is that there are other options at Coronado Springs, like Rix Sports Bar & Grill.
  • You don’t want to venture to Coronado Springs. We get it. If you aren’t staying at the hotel, it can be a bit inconvenient to make a trip out for dinner. While we love exploring new hotels, and it can be an excellent break from the parks, it will take you longer than if you got your meal at the parks or your own hotel.
