NEW Report Shows Potential Disney World Park Expansions Over Next Two Decades

For the past few years, there’s been a lot of talk and news around the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, formerly known as the Reedy Creek Improvement District.

The board is having their next meeting coming up on June 27th, but they’ve released their plan in advance. We’ve looked through the WHOLE thing, and needless to say, there’s a LOT of interesting information in there that indicates changes could be coming to the parks in the coming years. In fact, it looks like in the next two decades, the existing parks could expand more than we originally thought!

The Central Florida Tourism Oversight District Planning Board unanimously approved the 2045 Comprehensive Plan, and while there’s a LOT going on in this plan, something we noticed right away was in regards to the map below.

The map shows the composite suitability ratings, meaning how appropriate it is to place new attractions, buildings, or other guest areas in those areas. Brown means suitable, while dark green means unsuitable. You’ll notice there IS brown on the map, but is Disney planning to do anything with it? Well, here’s what the District had to say:

“During the next 20 years, the District’s development is expected to occur in those areas identified as suitable in the above analysis. The largest areas of suitable land are located west of Animal Kingdom, between World Drive and I-4, between Osceola Parkway and US 192, around Lake Mable, north of the Magnolia Golf Course, east of the Magic Kingdom parking lot, and west of Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Other areas identified as suitable are scattered throughout the District on sites of less than 100 acres…”

So yes, it does sound like Disney is planning to develop parts of this land over the course of the next 20 years. While we don’t know what exactly that looks like just yet, since the majority of the land is located close to existing parks, it’s looking like Disney may choose to expand current parks, rather than create a whole new park. The report continued by saying:

Development will also encompass areas deemed marginally suitable and marginally unsuitable as long as extensive (and more costly) improvements are made to meet requirements of the District’s Long Terms Permits and Land Development Regulations.”

Yep, sounds like Disney would like to expand. Now, this could be with more hotels, or we could see more attractions as part of expansions on the way. For example, we know Disney has already announced (and begun) their plans to expand Magic Kingdom by adding Villains Land behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, as well as expand Disney’s Hollywood Studios a bit by replacing Muppets Courtyard with the new Monsters, Inc. Land.

We’ll be sure to keep our eyes out for any additional information, but keep in mind that some of these additions may take a LONG time to come to fruition. Stay tuned to AllEars for all the latest Disney news!
